Took up grouse hunting 2 years ago. First one I shot at, made it into my gamebag. Here is one from last winter. Gotta love winter grouse hunting:

That's cool Dutch. I used to love grouse hunting when they were abundant in Sullivan county.

Dutch you sort of left the most important group member out of the photo except the one where he/she is in the background!

She's a great dog, but ranges well out in front flushing all birds. I do better on my own, but do like hunting with my brother and Frost.

I flushed 15 while walking into a deer stand last year. In a span of 60 yds. I was up in January and gave up deer hunting and went for grouse. I flushed 9 in a matter of an hour or so. Then, when we had some fresh snow, we sorta tracked them. I hit some tracks in some crabapples, flushed 2 and got the second one that went out. I'm also learning that multiflora rose is good for grouse.

I'd probably pick grouse too if I was guarenteed a decent population relatively close to home. I love the late season after spending the fall sneaking around trying to quiet for deer you can just go for a nice stroll through the woods and actually try to spook the game. It's a nice change of pace.
The guys I hunt with either were or are big grouse hunters so it's in the blood. One guy is retired and goes out EVERY day, no joke. We never even had dogs until a few years back.

I am getting tired of the whole "deer" thing, and beating the brush, and having a good time with friends, it tough to beat.
It makes hunting a social event again.

I love to hunt deer in archery and rifle because of the traditions that have been instilled in me as I was growing up. However last grouse season during the last weekend I took a couple guys up from our local RGS Chapter with there dogs and it was one of the best hunts I ever had. When I got home after that weekend my wife asked me how it went and I said it was the best hunt ever. Then she asked me how the dogs worked and I actually started to tear up and had to leave the room as I was emabarressed. She followed me and wondered what was wrong and I told her our dogs worked that weekend like I have never seen before. The last point on the bird that is in the picture above is a memory last will last forever. i am very fortunate to have what I have and to be able to hunt where I do and as often as I do. I am sitting here looking at my pups and have just reminded them that I only work 12 days between now and December 15 so they better get there game face on and be ready to hunt

Never had a chance to hunt with dogs but it sure does sound like a good time, Just may have to take you up on that offer this year.
Hope that the puppies don't care if I can't hit the birds!

I wouldn't mind tagging along with you guys and the kids. Not to hunt, but to watch some good dog work and just have a good time.

Brad, stop all of the fibs. You should tell them the truth. That there are very little grouse where you deer hunt. But, if they are that bad, I've got pointer that will gladly let you shoot a grouse over him when we get there this late season. 5 birds shot over him so far, but not all by me.

When I could still cover some ground, grouse hunting was right up there with anything else. Shot at lots of 'em before I ever connected with the first one, but still recall it. No bird dogs here, either. Grouse were once plentiful enough around camp, that it didn't take long to put one up. Haven't hunted them lately around there, but if it gets to the point that I know there are least a half dozen or so around, might take the 20ga double barrel out again? My son killed the first one he ever shot at, when he was 12. Sat. before buck season. Then he killed another one the following year, same deal. He got to thinking it was pretty easy, since gramps told him he was already ahead of me in the grouse department, with 2.

I flushed a few this weekend, while deer hunting. Two of them, flew straight down, wide open logging roads. I mean, they were taunting me. Last night, after being disgusted with deer hunting and high winds, I pulled out the shotgun and flushed a woodcock! No HIP thingy and no good shot anyway.

You are welcome anytime to join me. Only stipulation is that you will patted down for a potential GPS and then blindfolded until we arrive at the location.

Only "problem" is that Frost the English Setter will never allow me to hunt with her knowing I have hunted the GSP's! I have decided that next year, deer get my attention for the first 2 weeks of the archery season, after that, I may key in on thunderkings.
