i have my traps set and now i come to the question what is best way to humainly dispatch one. is a sub sonic 22 round good behind the ear? i really am not that keen on getting close enough to take a swing

just normal round or a sub sonic. i fear with a normal round it will mushroom by the time it get to other side and put a big hole in the hide. but what do i know lol. any one try the 22 bird shot for this? this stuff has the crappiest range but was fun to stand 10 yds at range and cover a 5 ft area haha

I usually just use a normal round. I have used shorts before, but either will work fine and won't leave a big hole in the hide. The 22 bird shot isn't worth a crap.

22 long or long rifle through the ear canal into the brain. Never had any exit and leaves no extra holes in pelt.

22's work on everything but possums. LOL
Hit them over the head, put a bar across the back of the neck, lift up and forward on the tail, breaking the neck.

If you don't what works well is one of those bigger rubbermaid totes. You put it overtop of the animal and then move the tote until the trap is on the outside of tote. This way you can release the leg from the trap and the animal cannot scratch or bite you. It is alot easier with a 2nd person so that the 2nd person can keep pressure down on the tote. THe tote is better than a catch pole because once over the animal they tend to calm down since they can't see you.

I started trapping this year. I find it very different, quite a learning curve, but I think it's just as rewarding as hunting. One thing for sure, your traps are out there working 24\7 even tho your not. For the dispatch question I've just been using the sub-sonic ammo. Ear shot works well when the animal co-operates, but that doesn't always work out. Fox have a tendency to be very aggressive, so I "let them" bite the rifle muzzle straight on, and then say "goodnight." You just have to be sure the muzzle is at the correct angle to get a brain\spine shot. Plus you want to make darn sure the catch doesn't have enough "slack" chain that said catch can reach you on a lunge.
I haven't caught a "grinner" yet. Maybe luck? I'm thinking yes. My skinning buddy hasn't said if he has caught any grinners yet or not. I think he's caught one-billion raccoons. But...OTOH, he hasn't caught one fox yet. He's new this year as well. I tell him he has to see fox sign before he will catch a fox. You know...scat, track....or a fleeing fox. If you don't see any sign....you probably won't catch any fox. I do have to ask him about the grinners tho. If he wont skin 'em.....it will be "catch 'n release"...like fishing!!

Last grinner my son caught, he shot it "ear to ear" with .22 subs, and dispatched it quickly. Since this is his first year trapping, he is skinning his grinners for practice and is getting quite good at it.
He has some sets out for fox, but so far, we are only catching the fox on the trailcam, but it's avoiding the traps in the area. Some new bait might be in order.

Welders gloves will work but they make it a little hairy. It is easier on yourself and the animal if you do the tote trick.

I got a beagle out of a trap a few years ago the week before he was in a trap and let ya get him out no issues. This time he decided to gnaw on my thumb. Boy did that hurt and I won't ever do that again. Still have the scar from it.
