Well I normally don't set this early in the season but due to a landowners request to remove some coons from his property I decided to do so before we started fox trapping. Let me start with a little back ground story on this 70 acres. I started trapping this property 3 yrs ago the first Sunday after rifle. We ended the season with 12 reds and 17 boar coon and 2 sows. Last yr we caught 9 boars and 7 reds starting the Sunday after rifle season. We start that late by request of the land owner because he manages the property for deer hunting and the fur is better. So in 2 seasons 26 boar coon and 2 sow coon. Does something seem off to you? So this bow season the land owner sees many coons while on stand and get a lot of pics of them on trail cam. He inturn asks me what can we do to get some out of there. We talk and I figure the reason the boar/sow numbers are so far off is because we were trapping later while it was cold and snowy and the sows are denned up with the young and we were setting for fox and the coon we did catch were attracted to the fox bait and were males moving from one den site to another to breed the sows. So now this season we are running a 2 week early line of DPs before rifle season and targeting the coons we arent getting in the "late" season. And hopefully remove some of these fox set cloggers from the property. Well daughter and I set a 6 trap line on Sunday pm before dark. All DPs baited with our own homemade bait. Friskies salmon and seafood cat food mixed with Weis grape jelly and mini marshmellows and a squirt of vanella about 6 feet from each trap trailing to the trap. First day's (nov. 17)check we caught Mr. Greedy.
And check 2(Nov. 18) we got #2 & #3
#1 was a nice boar and #2 & #3 were both sows... I think the plan is gonna work for daughter and I !!!
