Ok, here's the deal. I have a few Savages that I've upgraded with Shilen barrels of different calibers. So, last year I bot the new Savage Model 25 in 17 hornet because it would be (and it is) much lighter and handier than the current Stevens that I had re-barreled to a .17 Fireball. So, both of these shoot incredibly accurate, but I no longer need the Fireball....so I just sold the barrel, dies and brass and then I took my Shilen "hunter" contour barrel in 6.5x55 Swede and wrenched it onto the Savage action. So, I now have 2 rifles in 6.5x55. One in a light weight hunter profile, and the other in a heavy bull barrel for target shooting, long range shooting, and groundhog shooting. Now, I need a scope for my "hunter" 6.5, so I thought....hey, I will move the 4-12X Leupold from my Marlin 45-70 to the "Hunter Swede." That makes sense as that 4-12X scope was originally on the "Hunter Swede" way back when all of this started. (I'm probably giving way too much background confused-smiley-013 ) So, NOW I have my Marlin 45-70 with a peep sight, and a picatiny rail that I can put a scope on with Quick Release Rings (Cause I really like the peep for daylight, but the scope is kudos' for low light morning or evening shooting) on the rail. However, the Marling 45-70 is dead accurate out to 200 yards. Even a bit beyond, but really, for hunting it's a 200 yard rifle. Now, I've talked to a few of my hunting buddies and they are suggesting going with a higher power scope than a fixed 4X. (As I was thinking 4X would be good) Some suggested a fixed 10X or even 12X. I thought that was a bit much....so I'll toss it out here for any suggestions you may have. BTW, here's a pic of my Marlin with the QDR and peep sight on it....just for "your viewing pleasure."

My suggestion would be a variable scope in 2-7X. That is plenty of magnification for 200 yards in a hunting situation. I have a Leupold VariX II in 2-7X and like it.

Mutt, I was just looking on the big "C's" web page at the new VX-2 (the updated vx-II's) and the 2-7X has the "Long Rang Duplex" for the same price as the 3-9X with the "Long Rang Duplex". However, the 2-7X is a little shorter (I think a good thing) and the FOV @ 100 yards for the 2-7X is 17.8ft for the 2-7X vs 14.6ft for the 3-9X. So, I'm leaning towards the 2-7X because of the rifle that it's going on. Make sense to you?

Yes it does, Dave. The .45-70 is not an extreme range weapon. A 2-7X scope seems tailor made for it. My 2-7X scope is on a .300 Savage (model 99 lever gun). Of course you know where I hunt; the Laurel Mountains. It is extremely unlikely that I could possibly have a shot over 100 yards, let alone 200.

A 4-12X on a .45-70? Wow, first time I've heard of that. A fixed 2.5X was always perfect for the .45-70. I'd be all over Leupolds fixed 3X they just reintroduced if I were to ever wish to suffer the 45-70's recoil again. A Leupold fixed 4X would be the berries too.

I've would investigate the Cabelas LeverEvolution scope and LeverEvolution ammo for the 45/70. I went that route a few years ago and never looked back. Short range brush buster with long range capabilities.

I have a Leupold VX-II (2-7)on my custom White Super 91 .504 and love it!! A very compact bright/tough scope that can take a beating even a .504 caliber delivers!! I think it would be a perfect fit for your 45-70 Dave!

The Hillsgrove store used to be my favorite place until Dave ran it into the ground. You can't even get gas or air there anymore. Its for sale now and I hope the right person gets it.

Well, first off I am a Leupold junkie. I just prefer those scopes. I've purchased other ones and with the exception of the rimfire scopes and one Simmons handgun scope that has been attached to one of my 44 magnums and has withstood over a thousand rounds of full boat loads, all other scopes are Leupolds. The 2-7X, VX-2 with the Long Range Duplex seems like the ideal one, and after hunting season I can get a custom turret made for the load that I shoot for it. (Well, i can begin the process now, but it takes 4 weeks to get one.) So, that's the choice that I'm going to go with.
Thanks fellows.
Dave
BTW, of the other brands that I've purchased, Nikon, Vortex, Burris, Bushnell, and a few others that I can't recall, I've sold them and "went back" to a Leupold. Now I have never spent $3-K or $4-K on a scope, and never will, but the Leupolds always seem to handle my rough and tumble kind of handling. My gunstocks have the scars to prove it. smileys-whistling-823718

Yea...saw it was listed for 275 grand. I don't think it would generate enuff net revenue to support that much investment. I think the ever increasing trend dwindling camp occupancy etc has contributed more than anything of the tough economy there. I think when Dennis sold to Dave he made the right move at the right time.

I know my White Super 91's recoil from throwning 495 grain conicals turned a few cheaper scopes into nice rattles for the kidos!! lol

I shot my 95 open sights for quite a few years. Then I put a Leupold 2-7 on it, took it off a week later and gave it to my brother. Didn't pull enough light and really suc*ed for running shots. Put one of my several Leupold straight 4's on it, been on it for oh, maybe 45 years now? Here a couple years ago, bought me some of those fancy LeveRevolutions. Still use my REAL moderate handloads fer anything close as 100 or so yards, once or twice jacked the chamber round out for the next and only other round in the rifle..'cuz the shot was "out there" wee bit. It almost ain't no 'fun'. Takes all the thinkin' out of it When you can punch five rounds into a four inch circle at 200 long paces...well, that's just wrong. My old 95 doesn't get out much anymore. Just doesn't seem fair somehow. I've only got four scoped pieces. 3 Leupold 4x s..and one Alaskan 2.5 X. Firm believer the optics should smaller than the rifle

Agreed. Fixed power scopes are more durable and anyone should be able to shoot out to at least 300 yards with a fixed 4X.

I'm wondering if you have or had a very old model of the Leupold. The new one's are the VX-2. Not the VX-II, or any past model of them. The new models are very much different that those of old. I know that I have a VX-3 7-25X and if I put it on 7X I can clearly see a deer standing at 30 yards. FWIW Dave

I have a VX II 2-7 on a Remington 660 .243. It is so old it has crosshairs (not duplex). I'm completely satisfied with it's performance though.

And do enjoy reading yer posts ed Wentzler, I didn't mean in anyway to offend you by my post. I just know that from "jawing" with some of the....more knowledgeable guys at my gun club (you know....the old guys!! smileys-whistling-823718) that the older scope models just are not the same as these new high priced fancy one's. Then again, I recall when my Granddad bought a new scope for his Savage rifle. That was in the late '60's and I'm sure it was around $200 and my Grandmother could not stop talking about that for several years!!! fighting0092 My cousin ended up with the rifle and I'm pretty sure that scope is still on it. I just look at scope buying as an investment. I figure my Son and my Grandson's will end up with my rifles and handguns. (I hope and pray this country stay's in such a way that they can do so and enjoy the hunting and shooting sports) So, if I buy quality "stuff" now, not only will I enjoy it, but they will be able to just pick up the firearm and enjoy it as well. BTW, I'm glad you enjoy my post. And you should post more as I enjoy reading others experiences and stories. They always widen my perspective on life. Dave

You did not offend, my friend. That's real hard to do anymore Filmore said a long time ago, typical tongue in cheek,,"YA know wentzler...I don't think you CAN BE offended." Took me a week to figger out it was spose2b an insult I love my old stufff. 'Course I loved it when it was brand spanking, toonew. Worried a lot 'bout dings and scratches. Now I look at them as beauty marks, and can still remember where and how the vast majority of them happened. When I was younger and more foolish I sold my M88 Winnie in .284 beacuse it wouldn't 'group' much better than an inch and 1/2 @100 nomatter what I did. I'd put a good DING in the left side forearm of the stock right at the margin of the press checkering, which I 'repaired' with a mixture of wood glue and walnut filings. Most folks never noticed it, I could, of course. Anyhoo, long story longer...I still have the receipt for that rifle, w/leupold 4x and box of cartridges, Green's Gun Shop, Hugesville, circa 1969? 139.95 w/tax !!! I've seen that rifle about 6 times since. Last time, maybe six, eight years ago? at a gun auction up near the NY state border. Each time it fetched more money. Last time just a shy bid over a grand. It's just one of more than a couple I wish I still had. What a country we live in, huh?? Where we can have such fun and affairs with stuff goes bang? ed

Hold on a minuet there Mess2!!!! I happen to own a Win 88 in .308. It was my first rifle purchase and I still have it. I don't hunt with it anymore, but I will tell you there are a pile of memories in that rifle. The stock has a crack in it and I did fix the crack. It's not all that hard to find....but maybe because I know exactly where it's at. Every deer I pointed that rifle at and pulled the trigger had died. It never had a scope on it. To this day it's why I love detachable magazines.
