Or.....is it smack down time for the modern day rifle's without the brass? All I can tell you is my 50 caliber Encore is woefully accurate using a sabot-ed Hornady 325gr. and Blackhorn 209 powder. It will give me 1800fps out of the muzzle and that is equal to my low end loads for the same bullet from my Marlin 45-70. I think it's fill a tag week.

Zim, I usually "save" that one for the flintlock season. I've owned that Encore barrel for about 5 years now and have never even shot at anything but paper with it. OTOH....all paper shot at has died right on the spot.
But correct me if I'm wrong, I thought you could carry a bow and a M\L, and if a buck happened by within bow range, you could legally take it with your bow, even if your carrying a M\L. Just don't shoot the buck with the M\L. Am I right on that one?

The first year they had the season, I contemplated taking both. My daughter, might have been 12, used this logic, take the bow for a buck and take the flinter for a doe. Made perfect sense.
So, we both went out, and sat together, but saw nothing.
I later posted what we did on the Bowsite, and it was Wentzler that piped up that what we did was illegal. Never gave it a thought.
Anyway, I believe it was the following year it was changed.

Well, the "crazy" (for lack of using any other word) part for me is, I can't have more than one type of loaded weapon at a time on my vehicle. So, my options are to sit on a chair beside or somewhere near my cart......which is fine....or keep, say one weapon "loaded", say the crossbow loaded and the in-line with a charge in the pipe, yet broke open with no primer in the charge hole....then should a doe come along, I would need to pull the bolt from the crossbow, and put a 209 primer in the T\C, snap it shut, and then line it up on said doe. What do you think the chances of the doe hanging out long enough for that to happen?
I'm thinking go with the chair route.

Now, lemme ask this question while we are on the subject. (Are we on the subject? And who is "we" anyway?) Well, since this Thursday, Friday, & Saturday are the "Special over 65 firearms doe season, and disabled hunter firearms season....and maybe someone else that I forgot season" is it permitted to carry a modern firearm (such as my 44 magnum Smith revolver) AND a crossbow at the same time? So, should a buck stroll by I can shoot said buck with the crossbow, or if a dow strolls by I could shoot said doe with either the 44 or the crossbow? (Yes, I do have the proper anterless tag for the area that I will be hunting).
My "gut" says no.....but......

I was on stand sun up to sun down Saturday. Saw a ton of deer. I probably heard a dozen muzzleloader shots. I was bpw hunting. They really had the deer on the move. The weather was horrible. Wind and rain.

I did not make it out yesterday. Me and my brother-in-law went out on Friday so I was too bushed to go yesterday. Perhaps tomorrow. I did make it to the range today to double check my scope alignment on the Encore in-line. At 100 yards I was dead on. I also "tested" my flint pistol. At 50 yards it will poke a hole thru any whitetail lungs as long as I do my part. Of course, when I hunt with the flint pistol, I always set myself up so my shots are no further than 50 yards. Why tempt myself with a shot that I will likely miss....or if I hit it will only be a wound.
BTW, I checked the Regs on the "Can a senior\jr.\disabled hunter carry a modern firearm and bow at the same time during the Thursday thru Saturday "whatever" season that is called? And the answer is NO!! Only a M\L and bow or crossbow can be carried at the same time.

Well, I did go out this am. Now, I also took my crossbow and my T\C Encore M\L. I doubt I'll ever do this again. This was a PITA. I'm sitting there with my loaded Encore M\L, and my crossbow which is drawn, but no bolt is in it as that would be too many weapons on my cart (AKA Vehicle) at once. So, now should a buck come along....I would have to break open the Encore, take out the primer, then put down the Encore, then pick up the crossbow, place in the bolt, then aim and shoot. I'm thinking the whole time that if I had to do this....I would have to "bribe" the darn buck to "just hang on a little bit longer".
BTW, I saw nothing but squirrel today. So...that made any shooting decision easy. Of course, I know I can shoot the doe with a bow.....but I didn't want to do that. (wha...wha...wha!!!) I'm just going to take the M\L and if a large buck comes close....I'll have another story to tell!!!

Enjoy Loggy!! I was out this am. Saw no deer when the sun came up....but man...the turkey's were everywhere and calling like mad!! Then about 9:30 I decided to move to a different spot. The spot I was in was just a 40 yard flat easy walk from where I park my truck. So, I go to spot #2, unload my cart and I figure....well...you just never know so I grab the crossbow to put in on the crossbow holder. But...first I will cock it with the pull string. Ohhhh...what happen!! My lower back did a HEY BUDDY....WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!! Now, I've done this a few times before. Not cocking this crossbow, but just doing simple things and what happens is if I'm not "perfectly lined up" my only lower back muscle that works (Honestly, I don't know how many work....but I do know it's less than use to work...when I was "normal"...or I should say when all my muscle's worked. I dunno if I was ever "normal") but anyway....my back went TWEEK (no...not a twerk like what's her face does) and then.....I can't move too well.
So, now here I am, cart all loaded up, M\L on the gun rack, crossbow even got cocked, and I can hardly stand up. Grrrr!! So, I just have a seat for about ten minutes and let things settle. Well, got settled enough to take a ride and see if #1, I could jump up any deer, and more likely #2, see if I could find any fresh sign. Of course I saw zero deer. As for fresh sign, I saw only one set of what appeared to be a decent size doe...could have been a buck....I did not get off the cart nor bend down to examine it that close. But this was near a corn field (standing corn) and there was also a fresh set of coyote tracks that appeared to be following it. Well, not "appeared to" but in fact was. Wherever the deer went, so did the coyote. No blood or anything....just the track.
So, I had to come home and apply heat. Hopefully this will work out and perhaps Friday or Saturday I can go back out with the 44 Mag handgun and have at it.
OTOH.....lots of turkey birds!!! And the coyote track that fresh does make me want to do that trapping I was considering. Been hot 'n cold on that.....but maybe a little hotter with those fresh track!!!
