Wood duck flank feathers are the best to tie extended body mayflies with. (And I do mean the best!!) I can get two flies from one feather....one extended body fly, and one "regular" caddis using the remaining feather as the mayfly wing. Wood duck just is the best.
So, can I legally buy from a wood duck hunter these feathers? I know I can from on-line places....but these guys charge arms, legs, and my first born grandchildren for like 6 feathers.
Thanks.
Dave

Who's responsible for road kill ducks though? Can I use them to tie flies or do the have to be from a hunters harvest? .... Does PENNDOT or the PGC pick them up?

I would suppose if you call the PGC while standing over a road kill duck and ask them for a tag #, you will find out your answer. But thanks John. I would not want to solicit any duck hunters only to find out I'd be getting them in trouble. I don't duck hunt. I probably can't duck hunt. Even if I could.....I don't like the sport. I tried it when I was a young lad and couldn't take all that damn quacking from the calls.

To utilize the feathers the birds must be lawfully taken, both state and federally.

Hey, you're too damned young to be so bitter. Gotta relax, as it comes more natural as you age.

Tying a caddis with a mayfly wing? I love the yellow feathers for split wings. Never used any wood duck for extended bodies. Have any pics?

He didn't say he tied caddis with mayfly wings. He said he can get two flys from one feather, one extended body mayfly and one caddis.

From the post:...and one "regular" caddis using the remaining feather as the mayfly wing.
We must read it differently John. I'm always looking for tips from other tiers.
