Must a trapper send into the Regional PGC office and obtain a Trapper ID#, or is it simply enough to put your name and address on a tag on the trap? I realize the confidentially of the trapper ID#, but I don't know if that's going to be a big issue to me.
Thanks
Dave

Hey....FWIW, I called the SW region and you don't have to get the ID#. It's enough to simply have your name and address on it. OTOH, the officer did state that since the number is free and my trap would contain no personal information on it.....why not get it? Valid point so that I wouldn't come home to perhaps a crazy PETA person painting my mailbox red or something.

I'd go with the number for just that reason.

If I recall, I thought your CID# was also allowed since each is unique to the hunter?

Here is the law: it is unlawful to: (12)Set a trap of any description unless each device is marked with a durable identification tag attached to the trap or trap chain which, at the option of the trapper, must legibly set forth in English the first name, last name and legal home address of the person setting or tending the trap or must bear a number issued by the commission. All information under this paragraph shall be subject to the provisions of section 325 (relating to limitation on disclosure of certain records).

Isn't the CID number issued by the Commission?
I would think that if that isn't useable, it should be.

The only problem (that I see) with putting the CID# on the trap is, if you have a "buddy" who also happens to know your birthday, that "buddy" can now access your on-line license information through the PGC license portal. I suppose they could get that from looking at your license as well, but that's also why I know keep my license in my buttoned side pocket pants. Then again, coming from my past work, keeping information as confidential as possible is just something ingrained in my thinking. The plus of the Trapper ID# is the only people who can find out anything about it is the PGC. So, if you have a trapper that is doing something illegal, just give the trapper # to the PGC and tell 'em what the issue is, and they will take care of it from there.

Isn't the CID number issued by the Commission? That is why I was told that a CID number would suffice.

What is required is a trapper ID number issued by the commission, not just any number issued by the commission.

In Nebraska a trap tag with your drivers license number is sufficient.

I wouldn't put my drivers license number on anything that anyone else on the planet could obtain. With the identify theft that occurs today, far to much information can be obtained using information such as a Name drivers license number. In Pa. with these two pieces of information you can access the Pa. hunting license information and obtain an individuals full address and phone number. A crafty theft can do a lot from there.
