Looking at a knife that has a blade made of damascus steel. Can anyone here tell me what damascus steel is and if it would make a good tough "using" knife that keeps a good edge.

Damascus Steel is a pattern welding technique of alternating layers of steel and iron folding and twisting the metal during the forging process. The blades of true Damascus steel that I have seen will hold an unbelievable edge. You should use caution, however, when buying a knife in that several manufacturers will "etch" the metal to imitate the wandering lines of Damascus steel. Those knives usually prove worthless.
Gun barrels noted as Damascus or Damascus steel were usually ribbons of metal forged around a mandrel to form the barrel.

Yep, I checked into things a little bit and the knife I was looking at was well under $100 which tells me it's not true damascus steel. Ain't gonna waste my money...but it sure was purdy! Muab
