HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - A Lebanon County man must pay $7,100 in fines and costs for illegally killing a 13-point trophy class white-tailed deer. Gerald Schott Sr., of Jonestown, shot the buck on New Year's Eve in an area behind the Green Point Fire Company in Union Township, according to Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer Brian Sheetz. Schott also killed a 6-point buck during the regular deer season that he did not tag, Sheetz said. He pleaded guilty in February to one count of unlawful killing or taking of big game, which carries a $1,500 fine, one count of unlawful taking or possession of game or wildlife, for which he will pay a $500 fine, and one count of unlawful tagging and reporting of big game kills, an offense with a $100 fine. Because the 13-point buck is considered to be in the "trophy class," an additional $5,000 replacement cost was added to the fine. Sheetz also filed charges against Schott's son, Gerald Schott Jr. of Lebanon, for assisting with dragging the illegal deer and transporting it to a butcher shop and taxidermist, and for killing a doe in the regular deer season that was not tagged. Schott Jr. pleaded guilty to the same three counts and was ordered to pay $1,600 in fines. Emial Miller, of Lebanon, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful killing or taking of big game and was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine. Miller allegedly held a light while Schott Sr. killed the trophy buck and assisted in field dressing the deer.

That's a heck of a buck.
And some slob poaching it really pisses me of, yet these trophy fines are like hate crime laws, they are just wrong.
If you murder some one, does one really have to ask if you hated them, and this twit killed a deer in the dark, every one that does that should be fines 7 grand no matter if its a fawn or a monster buck!

Did they buy a trophy buck and return it to where that one was killed. Where did the money go for that deer?

Other states have gone to this type fine. I have no problem with it. Wouldn't mind $7000 for a fawn as well. Jail time would be nice in Joe Arpaio's facility in Arizona!

Bwaaahaha that's a good one. rofl When they increased the poaching fines, many said that it STILL wouldn't be a deterrent to poaching. REALLY ? To me, a $7000 fine, I would bet, will be a very large deterrent to his poaching career.... especially if he is married.

Moose, this is the case I told you was coming. Fleroo, a fine that size sounds good, however, a lot of them are never paid in full. When that happens the best that can be done is they will never be able to buy a license till the penalty is paid in full. Of course, night shooters don't need licenses to do their dirty work.

Oh yes, arrest warrants can and will be issued, they will be hauled in the the DJ, they will plead poverty, an indigency hearing will be held and if they are found to be indigent they will play with them for a while, then the DJ will write off the case because you cannot jail a person if they do not have the means to pay the penalty. You can jail them for refusal to pay but not for the inability to pay. Some judges will put them on ridiculously low payments like five bucks a month just to make them pay something but in the long run, not much will be paid.

everyone wants to see the bigger horns now it's bringing out the greed in people Horns didn't have a thing to do with it. He poached a 6 pt and a doe, the mans a slob, his kids a slob and so is his buddy. Truth be know he's been poaching deer his whole life. There's plenty of tags for any one that wants to legally shoot 3 deer. Slobs Dont care, I think a good beating is in order.

I'd suggest a public whipping followed by time in the stocks.
Seriously, I do believe such things would be a better deterent.
Dem Pilgrims weren't so stupid except for maybe burning a couple witches in Salem.

I do favor publicizing these prosecutions, the public embarrassment has to be good for some thing, maybe not to the slob himself but mom and pop or even a brother or sister won't like the small talk at the "welcome Inn", a little shame won't cost the rest of us anything, so I'm all for it!
