Ok, I'd like to know what the penalty is for shooting a sub legal buck these days.
Used to be that if you turned it in, you cut the antlers off, paid $25 and kept the deer.
What is it now??
Anyone know?

I always thought that the 25 was discretional. Normally you paid the full fine. I'm thinking it was a couple hundred.

I'm hoping one of the WCO's or former WCO's can answer this.

I think it still falls under "Mistaken Kills"

The way I always thought it worked was---Field dress the mistaken kill--Call a WCO--explain what happened--turn over the deer-and be issued another tag--but ya got to contact aWCO ASAP.
I know a guy that popped a doe in buck season(back when we still had the 3 day season) and had it hanging in his shed-- That night a WCO came to the house on a tip and the the guy said he was going to call in the morning. Didn't work--full fine--of course the guy tried to appeal to court but that didn't work either.
Rumor has it --it was one of his hunting buddies that turned him in

$250 is what I've heard guys getting hit with for sub legals. Of course most guys just bring them out after dark untagged.

Mistake kills are $25 and they give you a tag back. You don't get to keep the deer, and they have a list of people ready to call to give the meat to. If you get caught NOT turning the deer in, it's $800. And potential loss of license.
I know because, as much as I hate to admit it, I tagged a spike (more than 3") I thought was a doe on the last day a couple of years ago. It haunts me to this day.

Many folks were getting dinged the $800 even when reporting the mistake kill the first year of AR. There was a huge uproar about it the first year of AR's. The PGC issued several releases on how to report sub legal bucks and the accompanying $25 fine. Well, when folks started reporting they were getting dinged big time by the investigating officers for not positively identifying the number of points before shooting. No excuses, IMO. Know what you are shooting at before pulling the trigger. But, it was all over the boards and in some press as hunters starting complaining of the large fines after doing what they were advised to do and expecting the 25$ fine.

I remember it was one region where the PGC may have been going overboard, NW, IIRC.
I thought JohnS had responded to this thread way back, guess he didn't.

I know several WCO's personally and none of them nailed anybody for more than the mistake kill penalty of $25 unless it was extremely obvious that it wasn't a mistake.I also know a few people that turned in mistake kills. In every case, the penalty was $25 and they either got to keep the deer minus the rack or turn the entire deer in and get a new tag.Personally,I think option two is ridiculous but that's the way it goes.I also don't think it's that hard to mistake a small buck for a doe.

All I know is that since AR was implemented ive seen more sub legal bucks dead on SF & SGL's in my 50 plus years of hunting. Prior to AR it was extremely rare to find a any buck. Plus it didnt appear they died from old age. Normally in Early ML I see 1-2 each year & my Late season I see a few more.

I've never seen one, nor any of my 4 brothers, that I know of. Not saying it doesn't happen, just never see them.

I have seen it happen a few times. The several times I saw it it was hunters who shot small bucks for 40 years or so. Old habits are hard to break.

Not sure how much in deer season time you spend out there but i spend tons of time Early ML, Reg Deer & Bear Season plus Late Flintlock Season. Most deer found were scrub forkers with no spikes found. Some of the 4 pointers had really high racks.
Just my observations since AR was implemented.

I found my first one 2 years ago. It was shot and not recovered as my one buddy helped the shooter, which we didn't know and who also happened to be trespassing, track it until they ran out of sign. The shooter said it was a decent buck.
I found it still alive 1 week later unable to rise from its bed about 100 yards from where the search ended. It was a sub legal buck.
