Went for a walk checking trail cams on Sunday morning. Flushed a good number of grouse. Looks like there might be a few to hunt this fall. thumbsup

I never shot one, I went for them two years ago and couldn't find one but then saw 3 or 4 in rifle season that gave me nice shots.

Jim, you have to shoot more deer. We had some grouse, but then they timbered. The deer were eating everything coming up. Once the deer were reduced, the timbercuts responded, as did the rest of the property. We now have good numbers of grouse. WE also have an area with many crabapples, that helps as well. Once you lose them tho, unless you have a population close by, I think they are gone more or less forever.

I've hunted grouse with more than a few folks who couldn't hit them to save their penny. In nearly every case they were carrying their only shotgun, with long tubes and tight chokes. They all thought I was the best shot in the world, two and done. Two barrels SxS or O/U, have a couple of each. Early season Imp. Cylinder/Modified, beleive it or not 9s in the Cylinder, 7 1/2s in the Mod. Winter season I have a lil L.C. Smith 20 bore made for a rather noted grouse hunter in Bradford Co. back in the market hunting days. It's bored Modified/Extra full. 7-1/2s/ 6s. It actually got to the point where I'd be wondering a lot of days at 9 am what to do with the dog and the rest of the day so I bought a 28 gauge in Mod and full. That did solve the problem (significantly)..and some mornings at 9 am the dog was ready to go hunt with somebody else

I use 7 1/2s in both barrels chambered both for improved cylinder in early season. Then when all the leaves are off I switch to improved cylinder and modified with 7 1/2s in the improved barrel and 6 shot in the modified barrel. Its like a science. I also use Polywad "Spreader" Shells. All of this out of a Beretta 20 ga.

Rober there's little known law of pyshics regarding to kinetic energy/mass/ and retained energy that applies to ballistics few people know, obviously you do..or at least the principle For those who don't..but should.. Foot/ pounds imparted by a projectile on the object they impact add up with multiple 'hits' not linearally. but geometrically. I once actually carried a little card in my wallet with the math on it for doubting Thomases, and I forget the actual numbers now..but can still come pretty close. Say, if a number 5 shot pellet delivers 3 ft/lbs, two of them do not deliver six ft/lbs, they deliver nine ft/lbs. ( 3 squared ) 3 #5s, cubed, or 27 ft/lbs. and so on. It's the one reason buckshot is so deadly. A one ounce load of 7 1/2s contains almost 3 times as many pellets as the same load of 5s, with potentially and understandably almost three times as many pellets delivered to a same size object, several other factors considered. If I remember anywhere near correctly that 7 1/2 pellet still delivers almost 2.8 or 2.9 ft/lbs, and a same wgt. load of nines nearly 5 times as many pellets as a load of 5s at approx. 2.5 ft. pounds per. Let's factor in just a few of the other factors and say your 'target' is hit with only three 5s, 27 foot pounds, whereas same shot taken but 7 1/2s your target is hit with 8- 7 1/2s. 2.8 to the eighth power?... just shy of being hit with a bowling ball And the outside of outside possibilities? even a few pellets still does the job. (one of the reasons why there are 7 1/2s in my first tube for turkey birds, too

Ed, all that math is great stuff, BUT and here is the biggy, ONE NEEDS TO GET PELLETS IN A GROUSE TO KILL IT. All the math in the world won't change that constant.
