Welp it starts this Saturday.Did some scouting at camp last weekend.Did find some very spotty acorns and scouted a huge clearcut. There's not alot of deer but I only need one buck.I'm expecting a pretty good year for us.I'm thankful to enjoy the health and sights of fall colors.Tagging that buck will be mission accomplished but I don't get excited if I don't kill one.

I find it funny how my area has a decent amount of acorns and others have none wonder what the difference is.

Last year we had no acorns but loads of soft mast. This year few acorns but no apples.Dutch is right,it all comes down to weather with early frosts and rainfall. We have to adapt every season which makes it fun.

For me, this makes 3 out of 4 years with no apples. Apples are a biggy for us. We have very good numbers of apple trees.
Very little cherry mast, again. Used to be that wa sa biggy for us, but a few years ago, we had 2-3 years of tent caterpillers and that has killed some trees and also, I believe, set some back as well.
I'm going to be in a stand back off the edge of a clearcut, in a thick, briary select cut and travel corridor, just to observe.

I hope with them taking the corn down and no apples this year that the deer are gonna be up in the mountains eating acorns and such one only can hope because last year the deer weren't on the mountain.

I copied this post from the Bowsite, and the post is from 2000. Every year, someone brings the thread back, just in time for the start of archery season. I have always loved seeing this post, and I thought you folks might like it as well.
"A heavy dew on the grass as you walk to your stand in the pre dawn darkness...Orion, lone hunter of the night sky, bold and fearless in the Southeastern sky...a lone owl hoots as his nightly hunt is near completion...climbing into your treestand, the anticipation is unbearable...a pale indigo glow envolopes your suroundings...all creatures great and small begin to stir...a sureal sense of relaxation takes over...time passes ever so slowly...there's no longer a sense of urgency, no deadlines, no schedules...just you, God, and all of his wonderful creation. Some of us hunt to kill, some of us kill to have hunted. Either way, all of us should take some time while we are hunting and remind ourselves how fortunate we are to be blessed with an oppurtunity to observe nature at work. The cycle of life and death, our minute significance in the grand scheme of things, and our common bond to all things living. In this age of E-commerce and shrink wrapped beef it's a great feeling to know that you are capable of providing for you and your family just as our ancestors did for countless eons. I've always wondered why the leaves change color in the autumn, and today I now know why...it's God's gift to the bowhunter. "
