The fun parts over! Cleaning them is the worst, that's why I only catch them 1 weekend a season.

It didn't yet. I let them clean out for 2 weeks before butchering. I change the water they are in every day. 1st week there are a ton of mussel and snail shells in the tub. I never clean them right away to much garbage on the inside. I'm going to weight the big one on Sat., I'm still sticking to my 50# estimate, a lot of guys think I'm full of it! We will see!

Nice turtles. I was wondering about that 50 pounder I've been catching them since a kid and my biggest to date....oddly enough was 37 lbs If you'd have seen my buddy turn tail and run when I finally got him by the tail in muddy water and hoisted him to the surface ! And I'm quite satisfied with one per year now...

I'm thinking 1 is enough myself anymore. To much work. I've got the shell from the big one dryed out a bit, I'm going to clean it up, put a coat of poly on it and my daughter is taking it to Kent State with her next week to display in her dorm. She helped me catch it! and wasted no time at all claiming it!

When I was in college,a guy I worked with wanted one.I ended up finding one while out chuck hunting one afternoon and took it to his house.I have no idea what it weighed but it was huge. When he cleaned it,it had about 100 eggs in it.I felt terrible and never touched another one.The dam thing was probably around when they signed the declaration of independence

I've found them with eggs in them as well, but normally they are done laying by July. Thus the season. Starts July 1st.
