She isn't a hunting dog, but she's my dog and she loves being outdoors.
Lexi is 15 1/2; and she is a wonderful old girl. She was having some issues this weekend; and I put her on an antibiotic. I thought she had an abscessed tooth.
It turns out that its a really aggressive form of cancer, and the vet told me that they'd have to take about 1/2 of her jaw and put her on chemo.
I can't put her through that.
Long story (and fewer tears) short; she came home with me for a while. She'll let me know when its time.

Dogs make our lives whole, I'm sorry to hear of your pending loss, its a pain that only dog lovers know and its a heavy price we pay for the years of love that they give us. Enjoy that love while you both can.

I have had many wonderful friends of the woofy/furry persuasion, Kathy. What keeps me in the game is the following thought. The good Lord made dogs' lives shorter than ours so that we could have more great friends and experience completely unconditional love in our lives. It works for me. That does not mean that this grizzled old fart doesn't shed tears each and every time. He does. So sorry for your impending loss. It ends a chapter, but not the book.

Thanks guys. Brad and I are talking about the next steps. We don't want her to suffer, but we don't want to be to quick either. It sure isn't easy.

Lexi and Kath on the atv in May. Lex likes riding the atv, and we had her on it this weekend.

Dogs do like riding ATVs Mine rides around on my Gator any time a seats open, and I actually think he would drive it if he could reach the gas pedal.

Kathy...you and Lexi are in our thoughts & prayers during this time. Been through the same with several so loved dogs over the years & know whut your dealing with. We now have an aging American Cocker(9) & a Tibetan Spaniel(10) that i hate to think of the time coming. It will particulary be hard on the Mrs for sure.
Great Lexi to date has enjoyed a wonderful lifespan of 15.5 years which memories will be so cherished by you.

Very sad. On the positive side, 15.5 yrs is very long for a large dog. You are very fortunate in that aspect.

You know, they say one reason we have dogs is to teach us about our own mortality when they pass.
I had lab retrievers and goldens growing up and they all passed relatively young. Selfishly, it's one of the reasons why we won't have dogs... For now.

Kath and I took Lexi to the vet this evening. She passed very peacefully in Kath's arms.
She didn't live to hunt, she lived to love those around her.
Will always be missed.

Kathy & Brad, sorry to hear of Lexi's passing. Even when you know the time is near..still very hard. Your in our thoughts & prayers. I know when our Family lost our precious dogs over the years seems a new puppy really helped things.
