My brother's pup sorta went off on her own in Tioga County last week. He couldn't locate her, or she was just being stubborn.
So, he walks down a road, calling for her.
100 yds or so frm him, a yote starts howling.
In an instant, his pup comes out on the road, looking a little "worried".
Has anyone ever had yotes attack their hunting dog while out in the woods or heard of it happening?

I always assumed and have been told that 'yotes will eat up a dog real quick. When anyone brings a dog up to the cabin I remind them to "Keep'm close...there's coyotes up here."

My neighbor cross country skies and his old golden retriever runs with him, several years back he told me of a coyote sitting down on his trail 50 or so yards away, when his dog saw the coyote it started toward it, when it was 10-15 feet from the coyote another coyote launched itself from some brush on the side of the trail and bowled the dog over, and then both coyotes attacked it, my neighbor skied up to them and beat the coyotes with his ski poles while the dog tried to fight them off, the coyotes left them alone after a short struggle and the dog was a bit beat up but other wise fine.

We used to hunt grouse on the upper peninsula of Michigan 5-6 years back, but after hearing the wolf stories killing packs of hounds we no longer bird hunt there.

Years ago, there was a guy in Montana that had a trained yote dog. He would spy a yote in the distance, send the dog out, the yote would follow the dog in, and the guy would shoot the yote. Decoy dog type thing.

Decoy dog type thing. Not too long ago I read an article about two guys out west who do this exact thing. I forget what magazine it was in though. Thought it was pretty neat. The dogs brought the yotes in on a rope.

A pack of yotes can really tear up a dog. Years ago I had a pack of yotes come in on a coonhound that was treed. Fortunately I was close to the tree and they stayed out of range. I did catch a couple of glimpses of their eyes. IIRC the spring of the year is the worst time because yotes are more territorial during that time than during other times of the year.

I have heard of them eating dogs and cats but I never experienced anything personally.

When my dogs are out hunting snd they smell a yote or a bear they return to me right away and wont go back out until the scent is gone. Never trained them to do that it is ok that they do it.

I had one of my beagles attacked by a coyote before, just like cspot said spring is the worst time. If the dogs are running a rabbit and get close to a den site it is bound to happen. I've had probably 4 other encounters with coyotes and my beagles but they never attacked in those instances.

Was your beagle ok? Did you have to intervene? Are you armed while out there?

Behind my dad's house there are coyotes my beagle used to run night and day out there by herself and she always returned home. Hearing this make's me wonder how stupid I was to let her alone. All I know is if my dog got killed by a coyote I would still be at war with them. violent-smiley-007

I know of several instances where coyotes have attacked beagles.Larger bird dogs like GSP's seem to do ok.My brother has a medium sized mutt. It's part beagle and part some kind of Australian cow dog. It's not mean but fairly aggressive with other animals that enter it's territory.Seveal times it's chased coyotes off and it's always come back.At least one time that I know of,it chased off a pair of coyotes.Predators have a pretty good idea what an equal match would be.They instictively know that if they get hurt, they won't be eating.Have you ever seen vidos of these coyote dogs ripping the coyotes to pieces.Do a google search. It's kind of disturbing.

Just had some cuts on her rear legs and her muzzle. I always carry a pistol while dog running, but have never had the chance to get a coyote with it. They always seem to attack in the thick cover.

I hear yotes near my house all of the time at night and my lab looks and acts like he is scared to death, But I just tell him that he is a wuss.
