Couple years back I went for a walk an disturbed Mom and her three cub's.. One I guess was a quick learner as to where to go when trouble is around... the other two stuck right with Mom. This particuliar cub had no fear of height's as he went right to the top of this tree.. He looked like a squirrel walking up top on a limb... First pic is him getting started and second is him wayyyyyyyy up...

Whelan would have been up to it. I run very fast... LOL But all joking aside.. Bumping into bear's on the ground really don't bother me.. They must think I'm nut's as I try and close the distance between them and me, for a better look.. Put me in a tree stand, and it is a different story.. I get that cornered feeling.. They are at home in a tree and if they come up....what are you going to do... I'm talking during archery season...

A couple of years ago during spring gobbler season I had a close encounter of the black and furry kind. I had my back up to a huge old white oak tree along the edge of a food plot in SGL 111 in Somerset county. Dawn broke and the woods was in the process of waking up. Anyone who hunts knows that is one of the great times to be alive. I had chosen that location because a few weeks previous I witnessed a gobbler strutting his stuff along the edge across from me. Like many hunters, I was engaged in a pleasant reverie of hunts past when movement caught my eye to the right of my position. Withoug moving a muscle, I checked it out by moving only my eyes. Oh, Lordy Day. A bear cub. Where is Momma?
The cub worked his way across the meadow in front of me at a distance of less than twenty yards. Suddenly, Momma emerged. Very fortunately what wind there was moved the air from them to me. Bears do have a distinct odor. I am pretty much at home in the outdoors, but this was one time the hair went up at the back of my neck. Finally, Momma and child fed away from me across the plot and disappeared into the woods. By the way, I did not harvest a gobbler that morning. I still count it as one of the best mornings I have ever had afield.

Very cool pics, and story George!
Bears don't intimidate me at all in the woods; although I was slightly cautious in Alaska while blueberry picking with my daughter, then 7; and a griz. We took a few photos, let the bear know we were there, and backed out quietly.

George... Nothing like spring gobbler season sitting against a big oak watching the sun come up and Mother Nature do her thing.. Here in Jersey not many of those morning's will pass without having bear's stroll by. Couple year's ago I had one comming up through the wood's and I decided to see how close he would get to me.. He passed within 8-10 ft of me. Never knew I was there, till I said "Good Morning".. Then he headed for part's un-known. Never did I feel threatened.. They are amazing to watch in the wood's. Esp if they have cub's.
But one time I was up a tree with my climber and one came under me during bow season. When he was approx 20 yd's away I said something like: Hey Big Guy"... He looked up and walked directly over to the tree I was up and put both front paw's on the tree. He did this twice, second time I thought he was comming up. He definately was a bear with an attitude. From that day forward I'm a little nervous when I'm up a tree and they are under me. Put me on the ground and I have no fear of them..
