Won't be long!! My main sonar is a Vexilar LPS-1 handheld portable (below) which is outstanding for finding optimum depths to drill etc. I use a portable Eagle Cuda 300 from my kayak which I adapted to ice application with ice fishing transducer which I use on lakes where needing to see fish. If I could only own one sonar it would be the Vexilar LPS-1 hands down since finding optimal depths, ledges etc is what I concentrate on.

Ok, bring out to our club in southern Lebanon County when the ice is thick enough. I swear, every time I fish there, I say there are no feesh in there. LOL
Someone said they pulled an 8 lb largemouth out of there and released it last year.

A nice bass there Dutch !!
I mainly target panfish and yellow perch and trout when fishing Hunters Lake. Hard to beat hardwater panfish & yellow perch for table fare.

So you would just walk a straight line or two in an area, and take some readings at points to get a sense of the structure? Or does it continuously update depth when turned on and you move around? Dumb question; works though the ice? If it does, I guess this saves on drilling and dropping a weight to check depth...

The lakes i fish have known structures(ledges) at certain depths. The unit works well on clear ice. It continually reads as you move unit over the ice which shows drops(ledges) which are normally the best spots to fish vs level/flat bottom. Saves a lot of drilling. My Eagle cuda 300 will show actual bottom configuration, fish etc. but its transducer is not too good reading thru ice The Marcum LX-i is a similar unit:
