I know it's not small game as in edible small game (for some it is....but not for me) but a buddy and I went to a farm today to do some groundhog hunting and the score was.....Hunters, 3.....Groundhogs 1.
My buddy got 2 for 2, and I got 1 for 2. Now, my friend is a very serious hunter and he weighs all his G-hog kills, and measures the length, and keeps a log of 'em. Also, he compares these year by year to see if the 'hogs are getting bigger, or smaller, or stay about the same.
Well, since it's really early right now we are getting only adults. The first two (one his and one mine) were both over 7lbs!! Yeah!! Those are fairly good size G-'hogs!!
My second attempt gave me 2 opportunities. And yet.....he lived to see another day. But.....I know where he lives!!

Now is good time to find holes and mark with ribbon close to hole for you and I guess other's. A bit early for shootin as young will never get nursed or born. I always wait till around May, but as with last year weeds grow up so fast you have a hard time seeing them. The days of out in open hay fields are mostly gone now. the predators have seen to that I guess. I'm torned to startin to early? If I get a call to go I seem to just do it . Good Luck to all

Yeah....I hear ya. This place we go to.....we have to go now as the farmer is tilling and planting now. So, in about three or four weeks, we will not be able to see those beady little eyes. Besides, this guy is always happy to see us show up.....and more than happy when he hears us cut loose with a volly of fire. Of course, the best volly's are shot.....ten minutes.....shot, shot, ten minutes.....you know.
He's well aware that if we kill 'em now, there will be less during the summer.....and he's all good with that. But we've been hunting this place for the last 4 years....and we still manage to whack big hogs, and plenty of 'em.
It does let our "other spots" bread more targets!!!

IMO, there was no more fun than long range GH hunting.
Bghunter is right, there are almost no hogs in open fields. It was never a problem finding hogs upstate, but now, they are fairly rare, compared to years ago.
