What does everyone think of the new proposed squirrel season beginning in September? I really like it. Used to hunt lots of squirrel until I got into archery hunting. Now I hunt deer until I fill my buck tag. Also hunt some early ML and when fall turkey somes in that's it for me. Kinda makes squirrel hunting obsolete for me unless I get things done quickly. Couple weeks of squirrel only being in will give me a chance to hunt just them. May not be real easy to hunt them with all the vegetation still on, but I've got a few spots loaded with fox squirrels and black squirrels that I'm looking forward to trying out.

I don't hunt squirrels, but can really see the advantage to this season, especially for dads with kids.
Very happy Commissioner Martone got this thru for hunters.
Well, it has a final vote in April, but I hope it goes thru.

Didn't know it had a final vote yet. I thought it was a done deal.

A season with the leaves still on will be better than many here think. The squirrels are much more active under a canopy vs a leafless one. I think it has a lot to do with the red tail hawks scaring them when the leaves fall. I have experienced how spooky they get when the leaves are down.

Squirrel is about the only small game left around here. Rabbits are few and far,,,, and a road kill ring neck pheasant was the talk of the neighborhood last week. First I had seen since December 2011.
I am glad to have the extra time for squirrel.
I always wondered why the squirrel season was so short years ago. Never seemed like hunters ever made a dent in the population. Read somewhere that some states have a six month season for squirrel.

This season has been voted DOWN by commissioners that used the excuse of shooting lactating females, meanwhile, allowing Red Tag doe killing while fawns are extremely young, or they allow the shooting of groundhogs year round, with pups in dens.
Very sad......

That sucks. Like you said you can shoot groundhogs year round but not a tree rat.

Bringing this back up.. I think it would be AWESOME for kids.
Heard a commissioner say SAFETY was an issue. Really? So you feel MORE safe with a mentored youth or junior hunter whacking squirrels with NO experience during the archery season? What a joke. If its safe with other hunters in the woods, it can only be safer without them.
Why not open the season three weeks earlier and let these kids get some experience, and let the adults have a good time too?
Also hear another commissioner whine that squirrels might still be lactating. Yet another joke. So are deer, bear, and a host of other species that we hunt, but we don't stop people from killing them. The squirrels don't have any issues in any other state where there is an early season.
Quit making excuses and allow people the opportunity to hunt if it won't harm the resource.

With eight men voting on each proposal how is it that some thing like "lactating females" can be used as a valid point?
Is ignorance so rampant that even common sense is absent.

Yet it's ok to kill a groundhog or coyote that is lactating and starving the young one's to death? Your right common sense just isn't there. banghead

This proposal was not about anything more than a vendetta towards a Commissioner that spoke out about the Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas and how one or 2 other Commissioners wanted to smack him down....... and hunters, in the end. The Commissioner who loves the WPRA's is a very thin skinned fella and has been threatening people inside the agency since he became a commissioner. Must think he's some sort of God?

Sounds like a bunch of nancys that need replaced. For once, you made a post I agree with. A Commissioner SHOULD work for hunters and hunting, and not allow petty politics of the position go to his head. How an early squirrel season was gonna effect anyone in a negative way is hard to imagine.
