Been real busy last couple weeks but managed to get Monday & Tuesday this week chasing those elusive Big Mountain Gobblers with my Big Gun....not 410 country!! Monday.....didn't hear a gobble hunting the high ridges. Yesterday dropped about half mile down the mountain thru some oak slashing & hemlocks. About 9:30 heard a faint goggle up near top of mountain that I just hiked down lol. Did a few loud box call yelps & he immediately answered. Back & forth for about 10 minutes & he sounded to be near shooting range. He was really moving fast & was trying to circle below me. No blind or decoys out just sitting against large tree. I laid call down & then saw his white head slipping through some overhanging hemlocks angling down mountain. Visibility was decent so I knew he was soon gonna pinpoint me. I picked a small opening & when he entered I put crosshair on his neck just below his head. My Browning 12 3.5" magnum barked & game over. Couple flops & there he laid. Stepped off shot at 52 yards. Just got around to viewing turkey forum thread...CONGRATS to all here who tagged out thus far!! 22 lbs, 10" Beard & 1 1/8" Spurs

Congrats on the great gobbler. Were you using TSS or good old lead?

Congrats on the great gobbler. Were you using TSS or good old lead? No 7 TSS with Trulock choke designed for no 7 TSS.

Sweet. I figured at 52 yards some TSS may have been at play. Congrats again.

Sweet. I figured at 52 yards some TSS may have been at play. Congrats again. I’m thinking of going with Federals new 3” 7/9 shot blend for one in chamber followed with 2 3.5” no 7’s in magazine. Yesterday I was sitting on a not to steady log where I almost rolled off after squeezing that stout 3.5” 2 1/4 oz, 1,300 fps TSS load even with my Browning gas semi’s lighter push.😀 I have patterned many choke/shells and haven’t found anything even close to where I’m at…..currently that is!😀

I am still using old school #6 lead 3in 2oz loads in the 12 gauge. last year I ended up with a bloody nose on a weird angles shot. This year, on the first gobbler, my index finger knuckle came out bruised and has a nasty blood blister. All I can figure is the pump forend screw came cap back and whacked my knuckle in the recoil. These heavy turkey loads in 12s recoil like a beetch. I have been so used to shooting birds with arrows over the past 10 years, I forget how ignorant these things are.

Yeah those pumps are brutal in anything above 2.75". Years ago had a 12 ga Mossberg 835 that was brutal with the 3.5" loads. Between it jamming & rattling like a baby rattle got rid of it. It did throw some decent patterns tho. Inertia semi's are not much better. My Browning gas semi does soften to a hard push more or less.

Nice bird Loggy! I like the broom! Thanks Whitefalcon. The coloration was one of the finest I’ve ever seen. Pics don’t do complete justice. Should of had Dave here as photographer!😀
