I believe a few of our elected officals in Pa have referred to the PGC as land barons in the past. They voiced the same concerns.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Before Sept. 1, the Pennsylvania Game Commission will mail its annual in-lieu-of-tax payments for State Game Lands it owns in 65 of the state’s 67 counties. The Game Commission’s checks, totaling $1,719,056.59 for the 2006 tax year, will be sent to county treasurers, school districts and municipalities, according to Carl G. Roe, agency executive director.
Do they no longer pay these taxes? I know school districts get money from the ANF lands and timber and gas sales for the land that lies withing the district boundries.

Years ago Penn State did a study of how much various lands/property costs society.
The land use, residential, cost more to service than the taxes brought in, by far.
Forests, like SGLs and state forests, required almost no municipal services, and therefore were very profitable for municipalities.
Forests send no kids to schools, need no sewer and water, or police protection.
While I believe public ownership has it's good and bad points, it's not costing municipalities like these people assume.
In view of declining hunter numbers, they do have a point, we really don't need more public lands.

We certainly don't need any less undeveloped public lands.
Since 2020 the use of public lands for recreation has skyrocket in most places.

I agree, seems like we are losing a lot more of undeveloped land/farms in the southwest portion of the state. I have no problem with private landowners selling off their property if that's what they choose to do but it's nice to have the game lands where anyone can go without needing permission. That is one of the great things about PA. |

In 1985 I took a job in Delaware. The first two years I lived there I made a trip from Wilmington, De to Clearfield county where my then girlfriend lived. I saw steady change in much of the rural landscape turning from farmland into housing developments.
Developemnt will happen. I am all for slowing it's pace.

Every hunter should make their friends who hunt aware of what these two politicians are doing. I have mentioned it to a few of my friend who are avid hunters and none of them knew anything about it. I know the news was in the Erie newspaper, and maybe Warren's, but has anyone else come across it anywhere.
