I haven't hunted in Treasure lake the last couple of years and had to requalify with a shooting proficiency test over the weekend. There were about a dozen guys there to qualify and I was the only one with a compound. This isn't meant to be a crossbow bashing thread as guy's using compounds are just as bad. It's just an observation on how little knowledge so many people have. The test consisted of shooting 4 out of 5 broadheads into a 5" circle at 20 yards. You could take a couple practice shots but once you committed, there were no do-overs.It was once and done for the year. They had a heavy duty tripod set up for the crossbow guys that had a locking head on it.Basically no skill involved. The first two guys got up on the line and both put broadheads into the dirt,a couple inches in front of the target. The one guy just left and the other guy stayed and took a bunch of practice shots with broadheads to sight it in.I've witnessed this before but wow.He was a super nice guy so I took him off to the side and let him try a couple slick tricks and got him dialed in.It's just crazy how many people just don't understand the basics.I've often wondered if a mandatory bowhunter-ed certificatio should be required so people would at least get the basics. We did require that as well and I've seen enough guys do the exact opposite of what they were supposed to do so who knows if it would be a smart move.

It is a shame the many folks do not respect the animals enough to be proficient with their gear.

From what I've observed over the years,it's more of a matter of not understanding their gear.

I see same types at the rifle range sighting their guns in weekend before deer season. Only time they fire their guns for the year. Most can't hit sh!t!!

I'm in the category that guys make things way over complicated when it comes to killing Bambi.

I hear a lot more one shot and dones than I ever did back in the day. I know actually practicing with firearms has come into vogue in recent years. The old timers wouldn't do it. They had foolish notions about a box of ammo needing to last 15 years. We could blame the Depression but it was like that even before

Jordan went and shot this past saturday and it was actually worse. There was one other guy there with a compound and I don't think he hit the circle one time.Seven out of 12 with crossbows failed. It was hard to watch.I'm starting to think archery season should be banned.

I don't dare shoot the same target spot with more than one broadhead with a crossbow

The problem was, these guys had no clue where the BH's would hit and I'm sure it's no different than the same percentage of guys who start with a compound.I get that they're probably new to the game but they had to take a bowhunter-ed course just to get to that point. You would think bowhunter-ed would stress that.

He'd shot 2 or three shots, usually put each within an inch or two of the bullseye, and say, "Well, if I miss, it's not the gun's fault." He got a buck most years. He also didn't like the idea of shooting does, so he never tried getting the tag. His rifle was an old open sighted 303 British that sits unused my gun safe now.

We could blame the Depression but it was like that even before Back in those days you could walk into most." if we don't have it, you don't need it" local town store and buy shells by the piece. Don't remember my grandfather, father or any of my uncles ever shooting their deer rifles before season. Back then most still hunted with iron sights, and along as you could hit a 12 inch circle at 50 yards you were good to go. There was very little what we call today open timber, most deer were shot at less than 50 yards.
