So the weekend before Memorial Day, I planted Buckwheat and clover in the same plot. It's a log landing on top of the mountain, all day sun, beating down on it. Of course, no rain until maybe two weeks ago. Each day the trail cam sent a pic with it's progression. On June 11, it had a hint of growth. Today I got there in person, after 2 more days of rain. In the pic, you can see the large leaves of the buckwheat and the smaller clover underneath.

Looks good Dutch. We planted 1 plot with Hemp out at my club. The seed was from Whitetail Institute. Can't wait to get out there and see how it's doing. They say Deer Love it.

So, today my brother took a scythe to the buckwheat. The buckwheat really did it's job. Deer barely touched the plot after it got tall and stemmy. That gave the clover lots of time to establish. Here are before and after pics of his efforts. And then, an hour later....

Looks great. We would knock it down and then seed with turnip at my club. Works great.

Looks great. We would knock it down and then seed with turnip at my club. Works great. That would work as well. My buckwheat plot has been in brassica for too long, so, converted to clover. Had a rye plot that I knocked down, and seeded to brassica, that worked pretty well.

The deer and turkeys did not use this plot while the buckwheat was tall. I've always thought deer, generally, don't like putting their faces down into tall stuff. So, this morning, after cutting the buckwheat, I get a series of pics..... Five deer, multiple turkeys. Also interesting, not a single large buck has used the food plots I have on top of the mountain.
