I took my daughter out on Saturday, wasn't long and 2 started gobbling. So we set up and worked the birds for a half hour then they went silent. My daughter said she thinks the turkeys left. I said sometimes they like to stand in one place and go silent waiting for the hen to come to them. Wasn't long I got them to fire off again. 20 minutes later I had 3 standing about 30 yds in front of her maybe 6 or 7 inch beard on the one other was a jake and I don't know what the other had on him. She said the gun was getting heavy so I said pick one out and shoot. She missed. I wanted them to get about 5 yds closer but what are you going to do? She said she was just happy because she got to shoot at one.

You learn more from misses and screw ups anyway.Success tastes way sweeter after a kid misses.

I'd keep that confidential.I missed one with a shotgun and still just figured that I forgot to put shot in the shell.

I knocked down one Saturday in Ohio. SHould have finished it off, but I thought it was dead and had flopped over the bank. When I got there it was very much alive. Fumbled trying to load the gun and then proceeded to chase it for a few hundred yards down off the mountain. Never could quite get close enough to finish it. It ended up flying off a highwall over across the hollow. I had to go around and then couldn't find it. It happens.

The interactive nature of turkey hunting is one of the best ways to get a kid interested.Well done Stroup. Definitely agree, it's easier to keep them interested when they gobble and give their location because there is always the chance they commit. I never thought it was a good idea to stick a kid in a deer blind and make them sit there all day. That gets boring for adults let alone a kid.

I am sure even with the miss she was pretty danged excited. Good on you for taking her out. The season is long. Good luck filling her tag. She told my wife she likes turkey hunting better than deer. I finally got her a shot at a deer last year duriing the youth season and she was the same way just happy she was able to shoot at one. Hopefully she will want to get out of bed she stayed in bed last year when I was going to take her and that's when I shot my big 8. She was upset then, I gave her the old saying you can's shoot them from the couch.
