As a retired person who can hunt any day he chooses to hunt, I don't have to care much about when the season starts. As a family member I would prefer it to be the Monday opener. I still see no valid reason to limit Sunday hunting to three our of the 52 Sundays in a year.

IMO, leave it at Saturday. It has benefited families and brought new hunters into our ranks. FT

As a father with kids just starting to hunt having three days to hunt the first weekend is soooo nice. So much flexibility and much less rushing around for one day of hunting like it was the old way. The weekend leading up to the Monday opener was never a big thing with my group though, it was always about the hunting. I won't be real happy if they move it back to Monday so some old farts can socialize at camp for a couple days instead of actually hunting.
They mention in the article about missing out on family time that weekend. That's the least busy weekend we have and with the Saturday opener I get way more family time than I would otherwise.

100 percent support Saturday Opener!!! Sure wish we had a Saturday Opener during my college days. The nightmare of missing 4 consecutive Openers is still fresh in my memory. Some high schools closed for Monday but as time rolled on became fewer and fewer. A Saturday Opener with Sunday Hunting is great for our youth!! Hard to believe some oppose this!

I wish we'd have had a Saturday opener with my two older sons were in college. And it has brought some casual hunters, who found it difficult to take a day off work, back into the game. Working parents, students, non-residents coming back home for family Thanksgivings all benefit. And the extra hunting days should be welcome by every hunter.
He says he disagrees with the survey by claiming 90% of the hunters he talks to prefer a Monday start. His claim is pointless BS with no proof other than his anecdotal story. Haven't the license sales decrease PA was experiencing slowed, or reverse slightly since the change? The guy needs to offer a bit more proof for his claim, which sounds more like a personal preference to me.

I hate the Saturday opener from a personal perspective but I fully support it as it benefits more than it hurts.

I say open it Sunday and give us Sunday hunting.
Opening on Sunday would alleviate some of the rushing away from family on Friday, after the Thanksgiving holiday

I don't have the drive you do but I find the rush home after hunting all day to be far worse than going up to camp. Opening Sunday would be better than Monday but it would be one less option to hunt with my kids so I don't like it.

Doesn't matter alot to me which day it starts on. IMHO the legislators should stay out of it. Everyone seems to forget that they added 2 days to the season length. If you still start on that Monday you would still have the same amount of days that you did in the "good old days".

Yeah personally don’t really give a sh!t as far as impacting my own hunting. I do have quite a few friends though that have kids & grandkids in various levels of their education whereby the Saturday Opener affords opportunity to participate in the Opening Day which historically is a good day to be in the deer woods.

The Saturday opener hasn’t turned out to be the hassle I originally thought it would for me, so I no longer care what day is the opener is anymore. Actually with the Saturday opener and along with being able to hunt on Sunday, my two grandsons get to hunt the first 4 days. Their school district has Monday and Tuesday off. We don’t go to camp anymore the first week, a couple of us go for a few days the second week. The deer numbers are still down, never rebounded from the slaughter in the early 2000’s. It ‘s usually just my one life long friend and myself. With both of us being in our mid 70’s we can no longer hunt near as hard as we once did, and killing a deer just doesn’t matter near as much as it once did. It has become a time to reflect and retell stories from the past, and just relax. We do mange to get out for 3 or 4 hours each day to sit on a stump, and usually a couple of younger friends will join us for a day hunt. They then either put on a couple of small drives or still hunt toward where we are sitting, sometimes they move deer, sometimes they don’t.

As an OLD FART, whether it is Saturday or Sunday I will not complain. I like to hunt!! I take offense at bake545's comment "I won't be real happy if they move it back to Monday so some old farts can socialize at camp for a couple days instead of actually hunting". I'm not a drinker and when it was a Monday opener, I visited with friends, relaxed and also spent money at some small businesses in the area. Also, I know a hell of a lot more YOUNG FARTS that drank and partied all weekend when it was a Monday start. They just moved the drinking and partying to Friday now. Thanks

He does like to kid around about us old farts, and we take it good naturedly. There is a perception that people just want to go to camp, play cards and drink. In many cases, this may be true. Never was at our camp tho. For many, Saturday is beneficial, for others, because of the Thanksgiving holiday, it creates issues. PGC stats, pretty much showed there was no increase in license sales, and that increase was mostly non residents. Lots of pros and cons all the way around, but after several years, most have made adjustments. For most of my life, when I was working, I got Monday off and headed home Tuesday for work. Probably, the Saturday opener would have been a benefit to me,back then. Now, being semi retired, I've adjusted.

My premise exactly ! We were ALL "kids", and we survived. You either want to hunt, and embrace the outdoors, or you don't. I had my children in the woods at toddler ages, exploring, mushroom/berry picking, etc... Their outdoor experiences would never be molded by whether or not a deer opener was on a Monday, or a Saturday.
Now, that said, I am the camp "host". Other than local friends that hunt my place, I have a friend fly in from Florida, one drive in from Maryland, and another drive in from Virginia. They are all grandparents, and the two that drive in from out of state, find it EXTREMELY difficult to get here Friday as they host T'Giving at their respective homes for family.
I actually went through all of the nearly 500 school districts when they made the switch, to see which did/did not have school on the Monday after. 90% of the districts did NOT have school. The ones that did, were mostly Philly-centric (inner city). And MOST of those kids don't hunt anyhow. It was a non-issue comparative to the base of school-aged hunters in the entire state.

With a Monday Opener the Monday school closings had minimal opportunity impact outside of mostly grade-12 as those under 17 needs to be accompanied by an adult anyway. Guess we need a State mandate for a Monday closing of all places of employment for Pa Monday Opener so adults can accompany the Junior Hunters? Lol Much larger impact to college etc age students. Anyway you wanna twist it….a Saturday Opener with next day Sunday tacked on is overwhelmingly the best!!

We can certainly agree to disagree, as they say. But for me and "my guys", a Sunday opener, with the second Sunday tacked on, to make the 2 weeks contiguous, is overwhelmingly the best !!!
