My grandfather timbered most of the ridge in '61 and the fellow I had with me was absolutely astounded by the regeneration of our property. I've got some larger oak trees that need taken down so that the rest of the timber will be on the same maturity rate. Last Thursday, as we were cruising the timber between rain showers, we came across 8 longbeards and just down over the hill, we saw 18 to 24 hens. All the birds were walking on or just off the roads throughout the property. On the way back to the truck we saw 4 doe sneaking through the woods.
We left the property around 2:35 and headed home. You wouldn't believe the turkeys we saw in the fields. They were flipping everywhere. I've always heard that turkeys don't like being in the woods when it rains because they have difficulty hearing and move into the fields where they can see harm coming. I know that turkeys hate to get wet and avoid tall wet grass and probably rain dripping off trees. I've always had success hunting birds on edges of fields when the weather is drizzly. This was mostly in WMU 4A.

Last spring I was hunting a preserve in Bedford in early April and every hill for miles had turkeys gobbling on it all morning. That was the most turkeys I have heard since the good old days 20 years ago.

The turkeys are just happy to not deal with the heavy snow we had this year. 🙄

With the lack of a mast crop last year, I was really fearful for the birds if we would have had a hard snow or freezing weather. I was talking with a friend of mine in WMU 5A today and he stated that this might be the best Spring for birds that we've had in years. I know that we're not out of winter yet but the mild winter has been a blessing for the turkey population.

I found the acorn crop last year spotty...some oak ridges were spotty & some loaded. Same for beechnuts. Agree...this warm winter should really help!!

The have been gobbling from the roost down here for three weeks now. I saw two strutters this weekend with about 10 hens.
