Curious......does OH still manage deer resources on a County basis vs WMU's(or other basis) such as PA??

This is not a harvest estimate, it is the total of deer checked.
Many years ago, the head of ODNRs deer section said he wished they would go to a harvest estimate system like PA does.

I know our Bear harvest tallies are updated almost daily based on check station reporting. Of course, some numbers fluctuate some due to late checks etc but not too bad considering.

However, in Ohio you have to have a confirmation number to finish filling out your tag, so it forces most to report it. As long as the % reporting stays relatively constant the reported harvest is really just as good as a harvest estimate. PA should be able to publish their harvest estimate alot faster than they do. It isn't hard to crunch those numbers.

If the PGC mandated ALL deer to be checked-in I'm sure we would get close to realtime statistics same as OH similar to our mandated Bear & Elk check-ins. I'd have no issue with the cost of mandated reporting implementation if it benefited management of our resource.

That half ain't gonna go to a check station either

Check stations are a PIA AND TRUTH BE TOLD,i PROBABLY WOULDN'T WASTE MY TIME THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME IF THEY WERE MANDATED.I used to hunt Ohio and had situations were I got deer out of the woods when the check stations were closed.I like to immediately skin and cut up my deer. One time I actually had to stay an extra day because they were closed. The closest bear check station in the early season in Quehanna, which is close to an hour drive.Luckily,I have our WCO's cell# and he's willing to do it.

I hunted WVA a couple years & they had madatory deer checking. Not sure if still the case.....but you could check at any licensing agent. We checked our bucks at a lil grocery store where we bought our licenses. They gave you a plastic ck in ear tag.

If you're shooting one deer, taking it to a check station is no big deal.If you're killing 10-15/yr,it's a PIA.

I have always had the opinion that check stations were a joke.

Bear check stations are a hot mess. I know, right? Stupid bears. Pa bears are arguably the most studied animals in the country.

The PA Elk mandatory checking process is valuable due to the limited resource numbers involved & geographics covered. I agree much value would be lost if applied to Pa deer hunting.

As far as checking in Ohio now allows you to do it right from the APP on my phone for deer or turkey. I do it when I am still in the woods before I gut the deer. If I don't have signal it simply waits until it does and then sends it. I figure in about 100 years PA will go to something like that. LOL.
You can still phone it in or get on a laptop when you get home as well in Ohio.

I do like PA’s online harvest reporting availability! Plus it maintains a historical record of your harvest reporting which can be printed out for a hard copy record. You can submit via smartphone or laptop. In addition, those who wish to call in or mail harvest report card can opt for that method of reporting harvest.

I think in OH you must report each kill by 12 noon the next day(online, phone-in or in person). I know WVA you had a similar time to check-in deer. Then you'd get a Check-in "confirmation number" to put on ear tag.

You can't take to a processor, taxidermist, or process it yourself until you have it.

The app makes it very simple. You pop open the phone and fill in the info which is easy because you login so they have all your info. You are just filling in location, time, points etc. Then you are done. You don't even have to attach a tag to the animal. You are done. The app also allows you to see what tags, permits etc that you have and when they expire. Hard to explain until you use it, but it is pretty darn sweet. Not to mention that you don't have to carry your license/permits with you as having it on your phone is legal. I also read somewhere where the reporting by app has helped law enforcement there. If something happens in an area because of GPS they have a "live" look immediately of other hunters that were in that area, that may have heard/saw something. They said in a few cases it has given them leads.
