A male black bear from NEW YORK trekked roughly 140 miles from his last known release site before unfortunately succumbing to injuries sustained in a vehicle collision in PENNSYLVANIA! On Dec. 26, 2022, a bear was struck by a vehicle and killed on State Route 11, between Northumberland and Danville, in northeast Pennsylvania. Local police responded and notified the Pennsylvania Game Commission of the location of the bear and that it was ear tagged. Deputy State Game Warden Walker responded and recovered the bear. He noticed that the bear did, in fact, have ear tags but they were not Game Commission ear tags, they were from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)! DSGW Walker contacted the NYSDEC and learned that the bear was found up a tree in the middle of Albany, NY, on May 31, 2022. The bear had no safe way out of the urban area, and thus was captured and relocated to Delaware County, NY, in the Catskills. The bear was struck by a vehicle roughly 140 miles away from his release site. In Pennsylvania, black bears can travel long distances to reach food sources; these movements typically occur in the fall when food is most crucial and late spring when yearling bears are dispersing from their family groups. During the Urban Bear Study from 2010-2012, the agency documented radio-collared bears making extremely long movements. A bear collared in State College walked to Hancock, MD, and back. A bear collared at the Scranton Airport walked to Raystown Lake in Huntingdon County. And a bear radio-collared in Johnstown walked to Mercer County and back several times. Thankfully I don't clean carpets anymore. Never been happier. Don't miss it one bit. I now work at an ACE store that has been run by the same Christian family since 1884. Voted one of the best places to work in Lancaster county. I work in the rental unit, and over the winter do quality control on competed mowers and lawn tractors. Love working part time with GREAT people. Life is GREAT!!!
