The deer are really hitting the cover crop fields right now. We planted a mixture of oats and wheat the first week in September and the oats got about a foot tall and now with all the crust and ice the oats are peeking out above the frozen stuff making easy pickings for the deer.

I'm no farmer JJ but I see the deer hitting the oats and winter wheat down here. Do the oats and wheat "recover" in the areas they're eating or is it basically stunted?

We plant this mixture for cover crop that will not be harvested because the oats will winter kill and the wheat normally recovers in the spring leaving us with dead mulch from the oats and a green mulch from the wheat. It’s all to prevent erosion and building organic matter in the soil
