Another study that shows some Whitetail deer cover some pretty impressive distances for food, sex, or just to see what's over the mountain. Makes a fella wonder about how effective masks.. er I mean CWD zones are for stopping the spread?
I remember reading an article a few years back about Canadian bucks covering many miles daily moving from food to bedding areas.

I witnessed deer (there were 4) jump into a large pond, and swim under the ice...they stayed there for a good 5 minutes (so it seemed) and we thought they all drowned. We walked away from the pond and within seconds they all surfaced and away they went.
I still don't believe what I saw. But it happened and if someone were to tell me this story I'd likely not believe it

I know someone who used to travel from California pa to Clarion university every weekend or so because of the same natural urge way back in the eighties. Just like bucks, males of all species can display some less than logical rutting behavior.

Interesting article. I know over the years especially during low mast years... I've found corn in deer's guts miles from any corn source plus to access corn they had to swim the Loyalsock(incl deeper secions) to get it. Some years I'd set-up stand near where they crossed stream & have seen them do their swim. Some areas where they crossed looked like worn cattle paths back when deer numbers were much higher than current.

I have seen deer swim the Alleghany river many times in Warren and forest counties. And have seen deer on the islands.
