I passed up a bear here in PA. I knew it was no more than 80 pounds. The one I shot I knew was somewhere between 100-150 before I pulled the trigger. It was 119.

Not really,If they look like a bowling ball, don't shoot.Bears aren't that hard to judge. I guess you are the atypical "expert" on bears. Most seasoned bear hunters and bear outfitters often say that bears are one of the toughest game animals to judge in the field. A weight limit cannot be judged in the field. The only judge is a scale. You got that right... Very hard to judge a bears weight, unless he's standing next to a known object, like a 55 gal. drum.. Guess they made the weight rule to appease the antis.. But they only want to stop the hunt period...

Bear hunting sucked this week.. Bears were just not on there feet.. Too late in the year with these cold temps.. Total kill was just under a 100... Most of those were shot in areas that have a lot of deer hunters therefore bumping one occasionally... Area I hunt kill was low, as there are less hunters to move them... That's ok as we may have a season next Oct. and there will be some giants roaming around...

Per read of above...NJ bases it harvest limits strickly on percent of "tagged bears" harvested. I assume that a large perentage of NJ bears are tagged?? 35 Whelan probably know the answer to that?

I agree that it's tough to come close to a live weight figure on a bear. However,it's not hard to tell if it's a cub or not.Again,if it looks like a bowling ball, show some restraint. If the ears are proportioned big and are on the top of the head, show some restraint.Guys really don't have to kill every animal they see.

A lot of bears got left in the woods to rot, and some never made it to the check station back when we had the cub law.

I agree,,,,a cub law seems detrimental to the resource in the end game.

Season SUCKED.... Too late in the year, they were all hunkered down and not moving... I hunt in an area that is loaded with bears, when we got some snow in the extended part I put some miles on and did not cut a single track... Can't wait till Oct...

The majority of the harvest here was further West of me where there are more farms and deer hunters have piles of corn out for deer bait... Therefore they had food to eat and we're up and about more... Where I hunt is very mountainous with swamps, mountain Laurel etc... No mast crop this year either...

Hey Rich....curious if you know what percentage of NJ Bears are tagged by your F&W since they determine their harvest goals etc based on number of tagged bears killed?

I agree,,,,a cub law seems detrimental to the resource in the end game. I agree that there's no biological reason to have a cub law. With that said, bears are taken to check station in Pa where there's a lot of spectators. Many of of those spectators find the killing of cubs to be distasteful and I imagine in a state with protests,it would benefit the hunter's image to show some restraint. With very few exceptions,it's not hard to tell a cub from an adult.
