Ok…so you experienced hunters….how many rounds of ammo do you take in the field? Not how many in the truck…in the camp…bu in the field?
My buttstock shell holder will hold 7 rounds of 45-70. That’s what I’m taking afield.

I've always taken 10, but lately that seems excessive.

Generally, I have 1 for the chamber, 3 -3 shot clips in my outer garment pockets and a 12 shot ammo belt holster and a box of 20 in my backpack.

That’s what I’m taking afield. I usually load my rifle's magazine with what it will hold and that is what I take. Most times I shoot the rifle one time, then go pick up my deer. On rare occasions it has taken two shots, so I guess what I should take with me is two rounds? Often wondered why I carry extra crossbow bolts. Never got a second shot with that weapon. Never hurts to have a few extra along just in case, though.

That's the reason I carry five. It fills the mag and I count them when I empty the gun and put the shells in my pocket.
My youngest always liked his single barrel 243 better than any other gun he tried. He took a fair number of deer with it. But there were times that he'd play with the extra shells he carried in his jacket pocket and drive me crazy.

I know some hunters that use to carry xtra ammo for in case they get lost to fire shots to help locate them. Guess that could help. Now with gps, cells, satellite tracking devices etc likely less important.
We only ever had one hunter spend night in the woods & between DCNR search teams & PGC....luckily he was found next morning ok. He did fire some shots after dark but no one heard them. That was before cells.

3 in my pocket, none in my gun till I need it loaded, which I usually don't but believe in being prepared. Plus I don't have to spend a bunch of time loading and unloading.

Now I may carry it ...may not. But I usually do take it for a walk once during the season. If you can't tell I have no desire to shoot a deer any longer... I didn't even get a doe tag this year. The desire to kill has left me but good luck to those who want to do it...Enjoy your hunt!

Enough to fill the gun I am carrying and two extras. I will be taking a single shot Saturday so I will have 3 with me.

If I thought I would run into ISIS, I would upgrade those numbers to a combat load, although you never know with the porous Southern border we have these days. Once you run out of ammo, all you are carrying, is an overpriced walking stick.

If I were solely hunting deer...2 xtra rounds in coat pocket would be more than enough. Saturday...I will be also hunting yotes plus bear. If couple yotes enter my shooting range I may be glad having an xtra 4 shot clip as I'll be shooting till the last yote drops. On bear...well haven't killed one with a puny 6.5 so that xtra clip is more likely just insurance but nice having that xtra couple ounces in my coat! My sammiches actually weighs more!!

That's why I carry at least 10. Once you fire that last round the gun is useless. I'd feel really stupid being caught in the Woods with a gun without ammo. And ever since that guy went wild in Wisconsin and started killing hunters I have made sure to have adequate ammo in case of a shootout with some nut
