I went out by myself on saturday where I knew there was some fresh sign. I cut a track not long after first light and caught up to him in a clearcut around 9:00 am.He stood up about 40 yards away and actually came towards me a little. One shot from the 300 wsm and he was down.He weighed 301 at the check station and had one ear tag.The biologist looked the tag up and he was captured and released on SGL 106 or 108 in Cambria county on 2-20-22.

It certainly never happened to us before lol.I was looking forward to the simplicity of rifle season and we have 6 more tags to fill.I'm just burned out dealing with dead animals.Jordan called me at work friday afternoon because he just shot another doe and wasn't sure of the shot.I got up there just after dark and it didn't go 30 yards.I have it skinned but still haven't cut it up yet.Bears are different. You have to cut the hide off.It doesn't just pull off like a deer.Their muscle structure is also just different.

Congrats on the nice bear, Doug. Doing it like that had to be quite fulfilling. Especially getting within 40 yards. Did you see him before he stood up?

I never saw him up until that point but I knew several were in there.I was tracking him through a huge clearcut that was about 4-6 years old.I actually crossed two other fresh sets but they went into way thicker cover so I stayed on these. The tracks were fresh and I had a good wind.I never saw where he picked the pace up from a walk either.I stopped when I saw a few hemlocks and just had a feeling he might be laying there.I glassed everything, took one more step and he busted out,ran towards me and just stopped.I shot him at less than 30 yards. It was thick so I wasn't sure of the shot ALTHOUGH i WAS SURE HE WAS HIT.He ran 30 yards and stood on his hind legs but I couldn't get a clear shot.He dropped over and let out a death moan.I've heard it before but that's a pretty creepy sound. The one my son shot dropped like a rock and never moaned. It was fulfilling but make no mistake about it,luck was just on my side.
I shot him on property owned by the conservation fund. The roads are all gated but he dropped less than 60 yards below a gas well road.A guy did come down when he heard me shoot but never offered to help lol.My son stayed over night at a friends house and couldn't get home til 11:00am so I called my one neighbor and grabbed a plastic sled.Once we got it to the gas well road it was easy. The poor bugger had triple bypass surgery back in June and it never entered my mind when I called him lol.Jordan did show up in time to help load it in the truck.

Interestingly,As I was tracking him,I saw another set of boot prints off to the side and then saw the hunter down in a ravine. It turns out that he was a neighbor of mine.I thought he was on the track so I backed out and got in front of him in case he bumped one to me.He ended up walking up to me and when we talked,he said he never even saw the tracks.I told him to go up a head and I would get back on the track and maybe he's get a shot.He figured it wasn't worth it so he started in a different direction and I went back and got back on the track.I jumped that bear within 30 yards of where the two of us were talking lol.Sometimes you almost have to step on them to get them moving.

Smart Man ! ...... but I would helped a brotha out.... maybe. " 'DUDE'... Hand me your rifle and coat !" That guy killed a bear in there about 10 years ago and I helped him.He didn't seem real enthused about anything other than going home to get a cup of coffee.

Congrats to you and your son this year. I have to agree; I've never heard of two members of the same family harvesting a bear in the same season.
Oh, and by the way, I'm just as compassionate as Fleroo. I too would have gladly helped you by carrying your coat and rifle!

Congratulations dougl After 65 years of chasing game I have come to the conclusion that there’s more luck in it that most hunters think, and some hunters are just more lucky then others. Might make a good title for a book.🤔😁
