No shooting turkeys with a .22 while hunting squirrel now??? I don't often hunt fall birds, but the last three I killed were taken on squirrel hunts that turned into turkey hunts when I heard the birds scratching.
I have had several chances with my bow in the past, but I swear, if they didn't catch me drawing the bow, the critters can "jump the string" way faster than a whitetail.

I will be in a tree with the crossbow but will have a few turkey calls with me in case I see or hear a flock. A few years ago I heard some a long ways off sent out a few aggressive cutts and yelps. Two hours later they were walking right to me and I made a good shot on one.

I haven't killed a fall bird in three years and haven't hunted spring gobblers the last two season because of low poult recruitment. This past year was the best recruitmnet year I've seen in probably 5 years but still don't think I could bring myself to shoot a hen.Not every area is the same however.

In my life I've managed to take two fall birds with a crossbow. Man...when a flock comes by there are a zillion "eyes" looking at you while you take the safety off the crossbow!!!
So....what I'm saying is I got lucky each time!!

Had a small flock coming this morning but they got to about 80 yards and angled past me. I saw zero deer this morning.

Thanks, Loggy! The knee screwed up my hunting season this year. I will try to go on my annual Javelina hunting trip to S. TX in March.

Some pretty warm weather forecast into the weekend. Almost hope I don’t see any bear as I’ll be carrying my Browning 12 3.5” cannon!😀

I had two small flocks feed past me out of bow range while in stand Monday. The first was flock of 9-11(Sometimes hard to count turkeys)gobblers. They moved in the direction of a neighbors freshly harvest corn field and about half an hour later I heard two of what sounded like smaller caliber rifle shots there. I mentioned this to a couple friends of mine that are only casual turkey hunters-meaning they hunt them if they come across some-and neither of them were aware of the shotgun/bow only rule change. Maybe the shooter I heard is in the same boat.
I remembered to put a call in my pocket Tuesday morning.

Spent 2 day's in the mountains & couldn't find them...no scratchings etc. By afternoon temps reached balmy mid 60's. Look fwd to some cooler weather for upcoming bear & regualar deer seasons. Always a plus side....got the camp roof & gutters cleaned before freeze-up!!

I hunted 5 days on my property for turkeys this year; almost the whole season they gave us. Plenty of sign with scratchings and scat everywhere. I couldn't find them in the roost, hear them coming of the roost or a gathering call after they come out of the roost. NOTHING!!
Yesterday, I again found plenty of sign for birds as I bowhunted and saw four deer total. Today, I joined my son and his father-in-law on a Sunday deer hunt. Weather was perfect....cold, blustery, a few snow flurries and those dark, purple, threatening clouds. I mean perfect! At about 8:15, my son texts me that he shot over a rack buck at a ranged 35 yards and the buck was heading my way. About two hours and fifteen minutes later, he texts that a flock of turkeys just walked around him and they're heading toward his father-in-law.
His father-in-law isn't seeing anything except the twenty-some turkeys that walked past his blind. I hadn't seen anything all morning except a couple of backs of deer in the distance and then it happens. Over to my right, I hear feeding clucks and purrs coming up out of the sawmill hollow. I softly said to myself, "You've got to be kidding." This is how it always happen. When I turkey hunt, I see deer and visa versa. A couple of heads appear and then the entire flock parades right in front of me within shotgun range. Twenty-nine birds total. Where in the flock were these birds when I was on the property hunting them. They scratched their way over the hill to my left and I swear the last hen stopped, looked back at me, and gave me the feather.
