Decision makers are starting to openly talk about implementing an Earn a Buck program in PA.

Pa is not a state that would benefit from earn a buck. The only area where it "may" be beneficial would be in the SRAs where does still need killed. Even then, there are negatives to earn a buck in those areas. If they went to a two buck limit in the SRA's, then I can see some benefit to implementing earn a buck for the second antlered tag.

At the level this is being tossed around, it will happen in PA.

Duane Diefenbach. It was in a news feed I received.

I don’t get this. I always had to work to earn a buck or two. You mean some didn’t have to work…but now they will?

I'm hoping this is only in SRAs. In my area, there is no need for EAB

Duane Diefenbach. It was in a news feed I received. Is this the PSU fellow? Does he have the ear of the commissioners?

I can't speak for the entire state but the herd is increasing in every place where I hunt.I don't think EAB is the answer but more deer need to be killed.

Duane is a PSU professor. Wildlife Ecology. If you may recall. The PGC deer biologist said a larger buck kill could be absorbed. I forget the number that he tossed out. There was a discussion about a second buck tag at the time. The EAB discussion is happening if Duane is putting it out there.

Great if you’re an archery hunter or archery and gun hunter, not so great if you’re a gun hunter only.

I am interested in reading what he has to say about EAB in Pa.

G'damn. Aren't the archers doing a bang-up fine job at sticking nearly half the buck now with less than half the manpower? Now this ? Niceeeeeeee. Money grab .
Now IF, and I say IF they make the archer earn a FIRST buck by taking a doe first, have at it IF they are serious about increasing antlerless harvest and not more interested in selling high-dollar extra buck permits to archers. You can't effectively have rifle hunters "earn a buck", as the season is too short to be effective.... though some riflemen will definitely go for it and be able to pull off a buck-doe-buck harvest.
I'm not on Farcebook, so can't comment on how the program is proposed.

He's 100% correct but I don't know if earn a buck is the answer.

From my front porch; I like the EAB programs. We have far too many deer in Bradford County. Obviously for the brown and down guys and purely meat hunters this would add an extra step if they also want a buck and, granted, it may not be necessary in all areas. Possibly it could be managed differently for different WMUs. In states where they have EAB it "seems" to work and be accepted by hunters. As with any management application, one size does not fit all. Certainly some areas may need it worse than others. But the future of deer management is in for big changes with hunting participation in a nose dive and deer populations growing.

I'll bet it will be less than 10 years away.
