Got back from our yearly trip down south. We usually head to Nags Head but decided to go further south to Emerald Isle/Morehead City area to try a new area to put our feet in the sand.
Weather was beautiful. Beaches were beautiful. Much more laid back and quiet than Nags Head. More locals here instead of tourists. Did fairly well from the beach and sound with flounder, spots, whiting, lizard fish, blow toads and finally got into the elusive spanish mackerel from the surf, which are usually a pier fish. If the conditions are right, and you have the equipment to reach them, spanish can be caught from the surf. It was low tide and I could see some macks start ripping across the top as they tore through glass minnows past the breakers. As I watched they seemed to be coming in closer so I grabbed my light spinning rod and rigged up a 1 oz stingsilver and waded out and started hurling as far as I could. I was able to get to them and hooked up. The guy on the beach next to us said he didn't think he could get to them so he didn't try. He grabbed his stuff and joined me until the macks moved farther offshore.
Also in town was the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. $50,000 just to enter in the open category. You want to talk about the ultra rich and their toys. 60 and 70 foot Hatteras style sportfishing boats and their yachts to go with them tied up everywhere in Morehead City and Beaufort.
All and all it was a great trip to a beautiful area. One day, this is where I want to retire too.............
