Anyone have a recommendation for a surf fishing (salt water) reel? Years ago I bought a couple of cheapie sets at the shore. One still works fine but the other reel seized up and was simply not fixable.
So, I got the rod....wanna buy a reel. As I understand it anything that won't break in two cast or one fish will need to cost $50. That's a good price point for one week of fishing. I have the rod already.
Don't wanna spend over $100....actually don't wanna spend more than $60.
I did say cheap? Right?

I understand frugality. But fishing is my main hobby and passion, so I tend to go top-o-line. I started using St. Croix rods some time back and thought to myself, "Where have you been all my life ?"

Hard to beat #55(size) models of Okuma that will stay under $75. Probably the C55(Ceymar 55) would best fit your price range plus you'd get a number of years out of it with proper care. Link for good price at Tackle Direct below: Tackle Direct

I hear ya and I don't disagree. I have an Orvis Helios fly rod with matching reel. It's the absolute best rod I've ever owned. Fly lands where I want and casting is a breeze!! For spinning I still have my Mitchel 408 (not 308) that I bought in the early '70's and it still works like the day I bought it. But (always a BUT) this reel is gonna get used for maybe 3 days this year.....and maybe never again. I don't want junk that can't handle a surf stingray without breaking a handle or the drag doesn't work. If I fished salt water more I'd invest in better equipment.....but not for 3 days! Loggy.....Thanks for the info...I'll research and let ya know!

Whoa...wait just a darn minute here.... I thought you mentioned a hundred times or so that your main passion was gathering shrooms and trying to get under my unflappable skin.

Oh well, you make a valid point. But, that little hobby is short-lived, being it's weeks out of a year, and not year-round. Add to that, there is a very low cost associated with professional foraging (that's right, perrrrfessional ) and it doesn't apply to this thread. But... I will acknowledge your solid observation. As far as your skin. I don't think a tick would even consider getting under it.

Dave,,,,,,I did quite a few years of buying those disposable type so called surf fishing reels that normally would give you a year or so(at best) of any type of use light or heavy. Over 10 years ago & bit the bullet and bought a Penn Slammer 560L Live liner of course it ran about $150 back then. It's still going strong and likely will be eventually handed down to the grandkids. I did the same with my flounder outfits upgrading to Penn 965 & Shimano Calcutta CT400 baitcasters around the same time over 10 years ago. Of course, if you only will use the reel a few times a year plus maybe never again...then I agree with CHEAP!! Now if CHEAP translates in losing a trophy fish of a lifetime due to reel failure then mebbie CHEAP ain't so CHEAP!!

Hey Loggy...thanks for the surf reel recommendation. I ended up with the C-55 and it's a nice reel. I got it at the place you linked!!
So......what poundage of line would work for surf fishing? Like 30-lb....or heavier???

Good choice Dave!!
I go with any good copolymer formulated mono in the 20-25lb line class. 20-25 lb line diameters normally run give/take 40 mm which would have plenty strength with proper drag set plus should put around 200 yds on your C-55's spool. I really like P-line....a Jap made line. I think Stren & some others also entered the copolymer line market. Copolymer formulated mono is the best ive found for softness, minimal backlashes and good knot strength.

(Then I'll be ready for a day of fresh water bluegill fishing!! They won't stand a chance!! Gotta watch the hook set....could end up yanking out just the jaw of a bluegill)

LOL Dave!! With that rig you'll be able to use a 10" bluegill for bait!! Surf fishing is a lot of fun....just relaxing there gazing out over the ocean. There's usually something biting year round. A local bait shop is the best place to checkout on what's going on.

Ended up ordering P-line #25 Copolymer line.
Odd thing occurred when I mounted the reel to the rod…the rod seat was a little big for the reel foot. The reel would move side to side and that can’t work when I’m hauling in a 500-600-lb tuna. (Tuna?)
So I googled it and found out these new reels are built smaller & lighter than there older ones. The search said to put some heat-shrink on the reel foot & heat it up.
So that’s what I did….and it worked like a charm. Who knew??

Think you will love that P-Line. Neat fix for that reel fit!! I’ve also used cloth tape but like the shrink wrap better. Of course, there’s always a new rod that’ll take care of it too!!😀

I missed this post earlier but I have an Okuma on my bigger surf rig. I rig mine up with a 15/30 ish braid then add a 3 foot flouro leader joining the two with a double uni knot or albright knot. I believe the braid help to cut through the waves a bit better and helps to distinquish between fish bites and wave action a bit better due to its higher sensitivity and less stretch.

I've fished braid but with the newer thin diameter/low stretch copolymer monos didn't really see a big advantage unless fishing extreme depth such as offshore 100' plus. Also, if your rod doesn't have higher end/hardened eyes such as Fuji hardloy (souped up aluminum oxide) etc. braided line can cause premature wear.
