Bird seed is at an all time high price "IF" you can find it. I cleaned agway out yester day of their last 20lbs, (4 each 5lb sacks), at $1.00 per pound. A few days ago I raided some of the sumac trees along the road and the birds love it. Robins, goldfinches, juncos, house finches, bluebirds all fighting for the buds.

Grouse love it too, if ya have any left around the place? We've always had grouse around camp. Still some left, but not like before.
Years ago dad was gonna tear into the sumac along the edge of the lower lawn at camp. It came up beyond what he made into lawn down there, out in the area I used to flatten with the Echo trimmer each July. I let the sumac be. Also lots of aspens out along the road in that same area. Both are supposed to be favored grouse chow.
Had some sunflower seeds left from last year and got a 40lb sack of sunflower seeds last fall for the big feeder. About a quarter of it left. Also a big sack of "tweety" feed for another feeder. Doves like to root around in the grass under that one.

sumac is good stuff. deer like to rub it bunnies eat the bark in winter and I've seen turkeys trying to eat the pods while balancing on the limbs.... almost comical until I considered that it was the only food available in deep powdery snow. Wasn't long after I witnessed that I found two turkey carcasses in the snow. It's this time of year that one considers what we think of as nuisance or weeds to eradicate what the critters need to see them through the hard times of late winter and perhaps give some thought to leave some of the unsightlys.
In my meanderings this winter I did come across a set of grouse tracks haven't seen that in quite a while.

Yup, good stuff for birds. The bluebirds are really hammering it this morning. I may have to go on a mission to cut more. Attachments:
