IMO the 6.5is a fine pa deer cartridge but for most pa hunters is no better or worse than the good old 308 win.

People put way more thought in calibers, cartridges, broadheads and arrows.Put something through both lungs and it's lights out within seconds.I bought a creedmoor this year as a back-up rifle. It's a nice, accurate rifle that's easy to load for and has almost no recoil. It drops deer with authority when the bullet goes where it's supposed to but there's nothing magical about it.It may be the perfect rifle for kids and recoil sensitive shooters though.

A .308 with an MV of 2,800 has a 250yd energy of 1,719 ft/lbs.
A 6.5mm 140gr with an MV of 2,731 has a 250yd energy of 2,031 ft/lbs.
And the 6.5 recoil is mild compared to the .308.
And you’re right. Put it through the lungs & it’s dead. But to a recoil shy shooter, the 6.5 caliber, he’s far less apt to do the flinch.

Again, nothin real magical about a 6.5 creedmoor but I was impressed at it's terminal performance this past year.

Is it bad if I believe this to be accurate?

I love my 6.5 Swede & 6.5CM but my ole 06 700 Rem is still along on most hunting trips ready to jump-in if called upon!!

If all the firearms I own or have owned, I never had a 30-06. No reason…just never did.

If all the firearms I own or have owned, I never had a 30-06. No reason…just never did. I had no choice as my Dad's middle name was "ought6"!! Hunted over 40 consecutive years with Dad & his one & only big game gun was a 30-06 760 pump. After he dropped his 5th back bear along with way too many deer to count..... I finally surrendered my 270 "cat gun" as Dad called it & got a 700 30-06. Dad's laughed & said it's about time you grew-up!! Since my 700(which I still own) bought a 76 Rem 06 Sportsman pump which was a tack driver but rattled like a lil baby's rattle. Hate to know what Dad would think of me now totin these lil puny 6.5's!! lol

Had a 780 gamemaster in 30-06..Pure punishment to shoot. The only time I smiled is when I traded it in on a 7mm mag Winchester Mod 70.

I had a Browning composite stalker in 30-06 for a few years.Nothing really bad to say about it but I just prefer short actions for what I encounter in Pa.

I have owned a number of ought 6's, still have one. It's a Ruger M77, with the tang safety, killed a couple of deer with it and one elk. Will probably never carry it again , but it sits in the gun cabinet just I case I draw the Keystone Elk Alliance tag one of these years. My goto big game caliber now a days is the 308, I own three in that caliber, my son carries one, which has killed more deer than even he can remember, along with two bears, with estimated aggregate weight of 1005 pounds, and my oldest grandson carries one in a Ruger American Compact. I have no problem hunting deer with a 243, have shot more than I can remember with one. But to make Loggy feel a little better, I would start using a 257 Roberts in a Ruger M77 ultra light again if I could find one that didn't cost an arm and leg. DIL has the one now that I had. I tested fired it last year off the bench , just to check zero. After the shot, while looking at the hole in centre of target, along with remembering the low recoil, I said to myself, "Dam that's sweet.

.308 is a faster caliber than the turdy-turdy. OTOH….I have a Win 94 in Trudy-Trudy & it’s a fine rifle.

There's three 308's in the house at the moment. One is a model 88 Winchester pre 64. The other two are even more valuable

If there wasn't the ole 06 the 308 would be my next choice in a 30 caliber.

I haven't seen a box of 30-06 on the shelf in nearly two years. I see plenty of 308 ammo. If I was choosing between the two today it would be a no brainer. And yes the choice would be between those two and not a 6.5 anything

Before I die, I want to own a 243 and a 308. Wife has each, but I want my own I get a little bored this time of year. I've always kicked myself for getting rid of my Pro Hunter barrel in .243. One of the most accurate I've owned. I keep mulling over getting another Pro Hunter barrel in .243 or build another on a Savage action.

Good Morning Gentlemen...Sitting here doing nothing I thought to myself let's see if Dutch's site is still active.. I haven't been on in many moons, but password was still active (unlike other site where I got banned for non participation) so here's my take on the ideal Pa. Deer rifle:
First off. During these wonderful times we are living in, the key issue is "Ammo"... Your stuck using whatever caliber you have a box of ammo for..
Love carrying my Marlin 336 in 35 cal. Many deer and bears having been taken with this cartridge in Pa...Today if out in Pa. I'd move up a little to my Remington 700 Classic in 35 Whelen... Throughout the years in Pa. probably the most popular rifle by far is the Remington 760 in 30/06... So for what it's worth that's my opinion...

With your return, limited or not, this site is now up to TEN active posters. It's a "tight-knit" group. A little cabal of degenerates. Kind of like the PGC's BOC.
