I liked hunting them when I was a kid.

Haven't killed one in years. Not even in the backyard. I mourn for the thousands of poor widdle varmints I sent to woodchuck heaven, since I was a small boy.

I can't shoot them in yard. My Mrs. named the damn things. I did however take out a coon at my bird feeder yesterday afternoon. 17 HMR.

I had one at about 5 ft one time no clue in the world I was there. Shotgun in hand and I couldn't get myself to want to shoot it. Maybe I'm soft lol

I shoot these on a piece of property where the owner has a grass landing field for his single engine aircraft. I’ve been successful so far to prevent any hogs from digging holes on the airport field.
About two years ago I saw no hogs on about ten outings. But they are like insurance agents….they keep coming back just when you start to relax!! 🤔😱😱😱🤣🤣🤣

Not the case in the areas of Potter and Tioga where my deceased huntin' bud and I killed thousands over the years.
When I was up over the 4th, some of the big hay fields over near the NY line had been baled. They were once a very good place to shoot chucks, up until about 6 or 8 years ago. Glassed those fields and not one clump of grass indicating a 'chuck burrow, to be seen. Few years ago I took a long ride around some of the areas we used to have great shooting. Hardly any signs of woodchucks now.
He passed away twenty years ago as of Wednesday. Last summer he was alive, we were still killing a couple dozen apiece, on a Friday and Saturday 'chuck trip up north. He had gone up by himself the weekend before he had the heart attack. He lingered for a few weeks after, when he passed. He'd hooked up with another buddy of ours in Potter, for some serious 'chuck hunting.
He and I had planned to go up the following weekend. I went up over the 4th each year, family trip. Then he and I would usually go up for 'chucks a couple weeks after that, once all the hay was off.
Since then the eagle and bobcat populations have exploded in much of the territory we'd hunted 'chucks in, going back to the early 70s. We actually had higher 'yote populations around there, back when we were killing lots of 'chucks.

Looks like he didn't refuse that lil .17 Horny pill!! Fine eatin size there!! Second one took it right under the chin. I heard the thump.....no exit. I don't eat 'em. I toss 'em in a few places and when I come back the next day they are gone. Maybe that .17 isn't as good as I think?? (Me thinks an easy meal for the coyotes)

Been a long time since I ate one....in fact it was before the Mrs era!! The youngins taste like rabbit but older ones have sort of a musky taste.

Last I checked......hogs are still dead. But...I know they have "buddies" that are still there. Gonna go back 'n get 'em.
BTW....and I don't recall (you gotta be tough to get old!!!) if I mentioned this little item.
When I called for predators using an electronic caller (FoxPro that now is so old that if it broke, they would laugh if I ask them to fix it!!) I discovered that a "distress cry" would actually "call" groundhogs up from their holes. They are curious little animals and apparently they (like humans) wanna see what all the "fuss" is about.
So, I try to carry my mouth call that sounds like some little critter in distress. (Think rabbit). I called one of those kills up using the call. Now, I won't say it works all the time.......but apparently it works on the stupid ones. I call for maybe 20 seconds and just give it a few minutes for them to pop their heads up.
FWIW
