The Pennsylvania Game Commission will hold their annual elk tag drawing live at the Elk Expo in the ECCO Building on Saturday, August 21st.
Going into this drawing the PGC's HuntFish Licensing Site says I have: PGC REGULAR ELK-19 pts & PGC LATE ELK-2 pts. I drew a Late Season Cow Tag 2 years ago but successful cow drawees don't lose any preference points.
Best of luck to all who are in upcoming drawing!!

Since 2003, there has been a lottery with a bonus system in place, meaning that for each year you apply and are unsuccessful you will have another name in the electronic “hat” and, every year, you have a chance. As of 2021 the "Maximum Preference Points" possible to accumulate is 19 for someone who has applied every year since 2003(first year of PA Elk Lottery).

I have max points for both general and archery. Ridge.....you're about due to hit the lottery!! I sure hope so! I am getting a bit more selective as time passes by which reduces my chances. I used to apply for any tag but now it is bull only and only archery and general. Even if I draw a bull tag in general, I plan to take the crossbow but will probably have a rifle with me in case a monster presents at 100 yards.

I went for a Zone 2 preference with "fall back option". Cow or bull for me as obviously a bull would be great but based on my Late Season cow hunt experience.... a cow is also pretty great too. I'll carry my 6.5CM. Most hunters were toting 300 RUM, 300 Wins etc....long rangers as many shots were well outside 200 yards. I pretty much told my guide I prefer shots inside 200 yards as that's the max I had my 6.5 sighted-in for.

Thank you. I had no clue you could max out at 19. I'm at 7, 3 and 3. Wish I could go back in time and tell the younger me to enter the initial drawing.

You never know Hutton as 2 years ago when the PGC had the first Late Season Cow Hunt I applied and was drawn having no preference points. I also had 17 Preference Points in the Regular Drawing & wasn't drawn....go figure!! Best of luck!!

I read somewhere that a a few years ago that a state rep and his son each drew a bull tag the first year they applied. Any truth to that?

Not sure, but I know for sure the the lead elk biologist's son drew an elk tag soon after our elk hunt began. He shot a monster. Kinda an interesting coincidence huh?

.... in the 2004 drawing, both State Representative Mike Hanna and the son of former Pa. Game Commission elk biologist Rawley Cogan beat the nearly prohibitive odds and were among the 40 applicants who received licenses. Even more remarkable was the fact that each of them received a coveted bull tag.

Loggy how did you learn that you had won your cow tag? Did someone call you? How old do you think she was? Was the meat ok? Did you do anything with the hide?

Loggy how did you learn that you had won your cow tag? Did someone call you? How old do you think she was? Was the meat ok? Did you do anything with the hide? About 1-2 hours after being drawn I got a congratulatory call from the PGC. They gave me the zone number & that I was drawn for a Late Season Cow Tag. They also gave me the NC PGC Regional Office's phone number for me to call to confirm plus receive additional info. My elk was a young one likely under 3 years old. The meat was outstanding even putting a prime filet mignon cut to shame. One of my outfitter's guides(Nick Osman) Brush Valley Taxidermy in Sunbury tanned hide & did a European/skull dip for me. Nick did a great job! I killed my Elk on Monday and had The Country Butcher in Woodland, PA process and took my meat back with me. They were very reasonable & did an outstanding job. Below is a full report of my hunt: Loggy's Elk Hunt

Thank you for sharing. That's a great story and I cant wait to draw a tag. All I seem to think about since I bought my license this year is a dam PA elk. I live in south eastern PA (Bucks County) and long to see more of the western parts of the state. Thank you

I killed my elk on Monday & while my elk was being processed spent the rest of the week just touring the area...Elk Visitor Center, wineries, State Forests etc. Headed back to home(Eastern PA/York County) on Friday.

After consultation with a guide for ECO I put in for some of the most remote units as my first choices. They have less elk but some huge bulls.

Hey Ridge. Please excuse me but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the preference points. I understand how you can max out in the general lottery at 19, but how can you max out of the archery already ? Isn't the archery just a few years old ? Thanks.

Since the archery is a newer season, the max points one can have is less than general season. I have applied every year since that season became available so I have a point per season.

One nice feature in the newer seasons(Late & Archery) if drawn for a cow you don't lose accumulated Preference Points as they don't reset to zero as they do in the General Drawing.
