If the BOC wants us to believe the elimination of rifles in the fall season is because of decrease in population, they would follow up with a caveat that, if and when the pop. comes back, they will be allowed again. Total BS.

I was on a call the other week, with other sportsman, with the turkey biologist and the ED of the PGC. Yes, they said they would go back.
That said, the real purpose of the call was to defend her decision, not to listen to alternatives.
Typical state agency. We made a decision, you need to follow along....
Pure BS.
In the unit I hunt, 50% of the fall kill is by rifles. Just close the season for 2 years and see what happens or shorten the season.
No faith in the PGC. Never will again.

This change will save about 900 hens statewide, by the PGC's own admission. 900 hens. Taking this kind of opportunity away from sportsman to save 900 hens when hunting is not the reason for declining turkey populations in this state is pretty pathetic.

Why don't they just make fall gobblers only if population is a concern?

JMHO. I have been huntin in Pa. for 55yrs. I have seen the PGC make many changes durin that time. Some good, and some bad. This recent change for fall turkey is troublin to me. Years back, the PGC created WMU's in order to attempt to control harvests of various species in different areas of the state. Harvests were also regulated by different season lengths (dependin on game pop.) in different WMU's.
I could be wrong (memory ain't what it used to be), but I believe this new rule is the first time the BOC has eliminated a once legal weapon for a legal game animal in the entire state, instead of changin season lengths in WMU's that have a turkey pop. problem.
This new change is completely contrary to their purpose of establishin WMU's and different season lengths in those units. If what Dutch posted is correct about bringin rifles back if pop. increases, the BOC should publicly state that. I have not seen that stated, but that would just be a CYA statement in an attempt to appease those opposed to this change.
I believe there is more to this decision than turkey populations.

We shoot two times as many bearded hens in the spring as this proposal will save in the fall.

I wonder if Mary Jo Casalena (turkey biologist) is a member of NWTF

I hunt 3A. It has the largest percentage of rifle kills of any WMU, 50%.
They can't shorten the season or close it in 3A, just to see what happens?
Of course not. That's not what Casalena wants.
Like I said, the call wasn't about getting sportsman input, it was simply them telling us how they wanted it to be.
Again, a state agency.

Seems all the recent decisions & proposals are packaged with the attitude of (what are you going to do about it?). People should write stories about a turkey rifle experience. Send them into Game News.

Really sad when they don't listen to their paying customers. Maybe that's what they want since the greenies are taking over.
