My youngest son just closed on a condo in Myrtle Beach and told me yesterday to get my flounder rig ready and I'm most happy to oblige. Therein lies a couple of questions. It's been several years since I've had the line in salt water. The line probably has a "set" or "memory" since not being used. I plan on replacing it but what with? Mono, fluro or some kind of braid? Suggestions please.
Also, I had a neighbor that was always replacing line on his salt water rigs. I remember him saying that certain kinds of line should be changed once a year and other lines should be changed 3 to 4 times a year. Really? Are there any rules that one must follow when it comes to salt water line? I know that some of you fellows fish salt water more than I do and I'd appreciate any help in this matter. Most of my fishing these days is light spinner or fly fishing with the grands.

Dan.....I change lines 2-3 times a season(likely with on average 100-150 hours on water) as the sun plus harsh saltwater conditions will make line brittle losing a lot of of it's knot strength. Saltwater's hell on lines compared to freshwater. If your line when put on was new and only used once or twice plus stored in a cool dark locale...it may be ok?? Peel off about 10' and tie a knot & test strength. You will know quickly if it needs replaced. Plus if the line doesn't have a sheen on & looks dull/flat that's a sign of deterioration. Last several years been using P-Line CXX X-tra Strong Copolymer line(below) which is a great thin diameter line with minimal stretch. Has a high strength to diameter ratio. I fish a lot of rough/high abrasion structures(oyster beds, rocks etc) & this is the best line I found to handle about any condition. Can be bought in reasonably priced bulk spools (600, 1,000, 3000 yds etc). As with most copolymer formulated line...very soft plus easy on rods eyes vs some of the very thin diameter braided line. I found that the copolymer formulated lines to be the best as far as knot strength, minimal stretch, easy on rods eyelets plus less tangles.

That's a good choice Dan!! Neat your Son got a place there!! Did many vacations there before getting my VA place.
I've done a lot of fishing in the Myrtle Beach area over the years. You can get some flounder off the surf but mostly Spanish Mackerel & Red Drum plus snapper Blues throughout the summer. Surf was ok but did better fishing off the Surfside Beach Pier as we were staying in South Myrtle. The best flounder fishing was the early run(March-May) fishing out of Murrells Inlet only 6 miles south of Myrtle. Just entering Murrells Inlet there was a small boat rental place on left as soon as you leave Rt 17 where you could rent a small skiff 16'-18' and fish all the areas inside the inlet. IMO...best flounder fishing in the area. If looking for charters.....many options/types mile or so on down the road(Murrells Inlet)at Dicks Fishing Center(aka Crazy Sisters). Have done several Gulf Stream trips there taking my kids & had a blast!! Think they also rent smaller skiffs there too for inside fishing. Best of luck!!

Thanks for the heads-up, Larry. I'll be sure to look into those areas and pass the info on to my son. Well, maybe not if there's a wager involved.

Dan...one additional pointer. If you rent a boat make sure the drain plug is in before leaving dock!! No sense of adventure. I don't need any more adventures like that! Larry and Tom were in Larry's boat and I was in a boat owned by a guy named Dick...(which he was and still is!) Dick was in a hurry to leave for the dock and the reason...the ONLY reason, was to beat Larry on the water. We were up the channel beginning our first drift before Larry and Tom arrived on site. Halfway thru the first drift, I asked Dick if he had the anchor out as we were damn low in the water. Dick looks at me with this look of amazement and exclaimed "I forgot to put the one plug in!" WELL DUUUUUUUHHHH! We stowed our gear and he took of for the ramp at top speed while I said a prayer. We were riding so low in the water I think I could have paddled us there faster. That boat must have drained for 20 minutes! What really pizzed me off was I asked "the Dick" before we left if he had installed the plug(s)! There are three of them. Two for the live wells and one for the flipping boat. Guess which one he forgot. Oh the memories!

I will never forget Tom saying as we got up the channel near where you & Dick were..."Wow....looks like they are sinking!!" Main thing you got back to ramp safely. Ole Dick who claims to be a previous charter captain musta forgot some of the "basics" even after your reminder!! Talk about some ballbustin good fun afterwards!!lol
