Back when we started the hunt in Treasure lake 12 years ago, only the disabled could use them.Well,at least those with disabled permits. They used to cap the number of hunters at 200 and the annual kill would be around 120 or so deer. For the past several years, crossbows have dominated and the number of hunters have been reduced to 115.The chairman of that committee told me that less than 20 guys are now using compounds. This past year with only 115 hunters and most of them using crossbows, they killed over 200 deer. That more than twice the number of deer killed with almost half as many hunters.
I think it's a non-issue as long as restrictions are put on the gear, which won't happen. Not long ago,I was told not many hunters would be able to afford this new technology. Now that new technology is old technology and within reach of most hunters. Now,the technology is continuing to get out of hand and will be old technology within a couple of years.A 500fps weapon with a rangefinding scoope is not archery, not what archery season was intended for and it certainly isn't bowhunting.I now regret supporting them.

Interesting read! I agree with Doug's overall assessment. If the industry keeps pushing the limits to extremities a good thing will eventually go bad.

THat is true of alot of equipment. I went back to a vertical bow this past year. Bought a bow. Within 20 shots I was shooting sufficient enough that I would shoot at 30 yards at a deer. Probably about the same number of shots and I was confident at 40. Of course I practiced a fair amount over the summer, but I guess what I am getting at the modern compound bow is nothing like it was 25 years ago. The technology has come along way with them. They shoot fast and man are they smooth compared to what they used to be. You can put a rangefinding sight on them as well if you want. I really don't care what anyone else uses. I hunt with what I like to hunt with.

I've got a little delema in my head going on. Lol My girl bought me a crossbow for Christmas. I was shocked to say the least, as I'm and avid Longbow hunter that shoots instinctively. Not quite sure if I'm ready to make the jump, but I'll be shooting coon with it off my deer feeder all winter for sure. It's pretty bad ass. Ravin R10. I've never shot one.

I hunt with what I like to hunt with. I really didn't care but I'm starting to care.Shootinga compound is kinda like riding a bike.Once you get to the point where you're good,it doesn't take much to stay that way.I bought a new Mathews feather max back in 1996 and it chronied at 290 fps.I used to kill 6-8 deer a year with that bow.I loved that bow and used it for years.Starting in 2000 when I was able to get a bunch of tags,I used to rountinley kill 6 or more deer a year and rarely missed one.I also shot a lot of 3D back then.Last year I bought my first new bow in 6 years. It's a Mathews VXR that shoots right at 305 fps, which is about 10 fps slower than what I've been using for the past 10 years. My 3D scores are still the same and my effective range hasn't increased one yard. This bow is quiet, dead in the hand and stayed tuned the entire year. It's no more of an effective weapon than what I was shooting in 1996.Not much has changed with the way I set my bow up.I use a two pin sight and limit my shots to 35 yards, same as always.I don;t know anyone who uses a rangefinder sight.

Still pulling my 24 year old compound back. Got a doe this year with it so apparently it, or "me," still works. I have absolutely zero desire to go to a crossbow. Once I was proficient with a rifle then the purpose of a bow was to challenge myself beyond what a rifle would do.
I have two trashed rotator cuffs and I dunno if I couldn't pull the bow if I would go to a crossbow or just go back to rifle only hunting.

I'd sell it and use the money to have a custom traditional bow built. From the investment side, a custom built trad bow would hold a lot more of its value than the crossbow. Over time, the trad bow may even increase in value.

I'm fine with 1 of 2 shots, but I can't practice anymore it's to painful. The crossbow will keep me hunting, that's all that matters.

Ouch...but, you're the perfect candidate for a crossbow.

I had a couple removed one time along with a rotator cuff tear surgery. Got back into bow hunting some with the compound afterwards, and I was just about to go back to a recurve from my compound, missed the lightness of the recurve, when I started having back problems, found out I had lumbar spinal stenosis. After the first surgeryI was able to use the compound but didn't really feel that comfortable shooting it, so I went with a crossbow, which I'm not that fond of. Three years later I'm back getting my second surgery for the stenosis, different vertebra. Hunted some, but not much. Well it's been 3 years again since the last one, and the stenosis is back, different vertebra again, it's also affecting my ability to walk any distance this time. Have an appointment with the pain management doc tomorrow morning, will probably start with a couple of shots, but I figure I'm look at going under the knife again. Hopefully I can do some bow hunting again this year, even though I only hunt bow when I have a good tracker along, or a phone call away. The greatest reason I have never got into bow hunting hot and heavy is because I'm color blind, I just can't see red blood mixed in with brown leaves or green vegetation. If I didn't have all these problems I would probably be using a recurve. There's just something about the simplicity of that type bow that feels right, so I know what you're saying.

Ouch...but, you're the perfect candidate for a crossbow. I'm not giving up hunting with longbow, but I've got the crossbow and will use if needed. It does seem a bit cumbersome in comparison to my longbow.

Being one who use to hunt with a conventional bow, then compound, and now crossbow because I must, I’ve always contended a compound was the easiest to use.

Local gun shop had there annual big blow out sale about 3 years ago and had some great sales on crossbows. I bought one, Bought a archery license that year to.
Owned the xbow 2 years, never even fired it once, sold it for what I paid for it.
That pretty much sum's up my bow hunting career and my knowledge of bows.
