Agreed. I signed up. Good to be depressed with other folks about the sorry state of living on the southern edge of the Ice Belt.

Well, for me at least, it looks like we'll get back to ice-making next week. I bet we can get out on the ice in a couple of weeks, no?!

This ice formation / thickness chart was posted on the 247ice fishing site and I thought it was good info... it seems that thicker ice acts as an insulator too, maybe preserving itself somewhat. Also, ice forms top down on deeper lakes and bottom up on shallower ponds and streams. I think maybe after this weekend warmup, we may be back to good ice in a couple of weeks...?! It seems to me that with average temps in the 20s, starting with 1-3inches of ice already there, you can form 1/2" or more per day.

I'll stick to the ole drill before you proceed method of determining ice thickness. One ice water dunking has left it's mark in this old gray matter. ;D

I think a PFD would be a good idear there Freytown! ;D I have been using a PFD for some time now when I am unsure of the ice thickness. I fish alone a lot these days since most of the ole gang got old. Told them you well rust out before you wear out...but they just don't bother to listen. Don't matter tho, I always liked the solitude.

Ice was barely hanging on at the lake today. Yeesh. Hopefully, what was left will stick and we'll form some more this week. Patience is a what?!

The next week really isn't very promising for ice creation around here.
My daughter should be arriving in Minneapolis today to live for at least the next year. Was supposed to be 8 degrees there this morning. THAT is conducive for ice dvelopment, that's for sure!

This is how you make ice this week (I'll be fishing this weekend): Another cool weather site: weatherspark.com/#You can also right-click on the map to place the marker on a very specific location.

Rangers at my go to lake have deemed it's good to go! They say there's 4" of ice, but I bet that means 5-6". I'll be out Saturday and am pumped.

Here ya go Loggy. The report for Tioga County:
Ice condition update for Tioga County- Please note these are for reference only. With the warm weather and rain last week, there is going to be thin spots. Make sure you check the ice as you venture out. Remember to bring your safety gear! We will update again on Friday evening. There is a slight dusting of snow on the lakes now and this is going to cover up some potential weak spots. Use your best judgement out there. If you don't feel safe, its best to stay home and come back another day. The ice should only keep getting thicker now. We should have better conditions by the weekend and I expect Beechwood, Hills Creek, and Hamilton to be fishable by then. Beechwood- The lake is completely iced over. There is some junk ice right by the boat launch, but out past that is good black ice. We measured anyhere from 3-4 inches out to about 30 feet from the launch. We did not check anywhere else. Hills Creek- We checked Hills at both the stumps end and the Pines Launch. In both areas we found roughly 3.5 to just about 4" of good, hard, black ice. There is a little bit of slush/junk right at the edges on the stumps end, but other than that, the ice seems in good shape. We measured out to about 100 feet from the stumps end and found consistent conditions. This lake will be fishable in the next few days for sure! Hamilton- Hamilton is about 95% capped, but the edges are sketchy from the high water. I did not venture onto the ice as I did not want to get wet, getting to the ice sheet. the first few feet are in rough shape. This should harden up tonight and I expect to be fishing here soon. There is some wet spots in the middle and by the boat launch as well. Cowanesque- All of the west end of Cowanesque is frozen, but there is a lot of junk on the ice and the ice itself is murky, with muddy water below. I did not feel safe enough to venture far from the launch. the east end towards the dam is all open. Hammond- Hammond looks terrible. the water is muddy and the lake is half open. It will be a little while before this locks up. Please share with your friends. Remember to stop in and see us at Tackle Shack for all your live bait and ice fishing needs too. Good luck and be safe out there. We will update again late Friday night.
