It's a start? Over 4,000 last year with the extra seasons. Still too many running around. Have seen several pics of bears locally this fall, all of which have been destroying bird feeders and causing other issues.
Here's a good one: Some years ago my cousin that lives across the valley from camp, came upon a sow, two cubs of the year and two larger cubs nearby. He was up high in the wooded ridge way behind his place, first day of spring gobbler.
Just getting light, noticed several large objects off to one side of where he'd set up. As it became lighter, realized what the "blobs" were. All the bears were sound sleep. Decided he didn't want to be that close to bears while trying to call a gobbler in, so struck up a series of loud yelps. Momma and the two larger cubs tore off down thru the woods. Both cubs of the year went up nearby trees and commenced to bleat endlessly. So he finally gave up and relocated.
Shared that with Mark Ternent later that year, at a BOC meeting. He told me that sows will not abide having their cubs from the previous year with them, when they have young cubs. Today I was up the mountain near our house, to pick up a club member's dues for 2021. He showed me a stack of bear pics, in his yard and around the house. Some of the pics showed exactly what my cousin had told me about: Sow, two little cubs and two larger cubs.
Maybe it was time for Ternent to give up being the bear biologist, for something else?
Member also told me about his experiences with PGC trying to trap bears around his place, over the past few years. First one, two guys that brought the trap, broke the door mechanism trying to set the trap. Finally fixed it, then came back a few days later to remove it. No bears caught. Guy eventually went over to PGC/HQ and raised hell about it, so they fetched out another trap and finally got one small bear. Said he removed the bait PGC guys had put in the trap and put a mesh bag of crushed sunflower seeds in the trap and scattered a trail of seeds into the trap. Had a bear in it within two days.

over 1500 by archers, and only 15 by muzzleloaders? The PGC has it screwed up. I was just checking it, and it now says no bears have been killed

Haven't been following too much but how does 1977 compare to last year's harvest before Regular Season kicked off??

I just can't imagine, who would want to shoot and deal with a bear (gut/drag), eat the SOB, or pay high $ for a mount or rug ? Those bear can continue to sh!t in the woods, to my liking.

Might have a change of heart, if they begin to regularly visit your place, tearing stuff up?
Years ago when bears began to show up in the area around my camp, most thought it was neat to see them around. As they became more common and caused some issues, folks became less happy with them. Eventually some of the area's beef farmers realized that bears, mostly early emerging boars in the spring, were taking more newborn calves than the coyotes.
My cousin ceased to be enamored of visiting bears, when they got into his open faced shed down back and destroyed some of his plastic gas cans, few other things.

Snow plows just came through first ones I've seen this year. Cold snowing & blowing here 18 when I got up...21 now, at least it's going in the right direction. Had a bear in twice last week to the bird feeders only saw him once. Expect they'll be gone soon at least till spring comes around.

We love to hunt them. Our biggest issue is finding someone who wants to shoot one.
All of us in the "core" gang that wanted one, has gotten at least one or more. We always seem to find people who want to hunt with us and want a bear.
We drive them out, they shoot them. We take some cool pic's, load it on their truck and our part is done. WE...as a group get to be part of it, THEY get to spend money for mount, meat and then listen to wife b1tch about where it will go in the house........

I love hunting them, but could care less if I ever kill another one.
