Heading out for the very first time with a rifle for bear this season. Was planning on using my Browning BLR in 308 cal. Question, Will 150 grain bullets with the right shot placement do the trick or should I sight in with 180's?

The two I shot were some of the quickest dying big game animals I have shot.

I guess if you are going to be doing drives and will be taking running shots, the 180s may add some extra penetration on less than ideal angles.

I'm sure the bullet would do fine. Just hit the boiler room which on a bear is not the same place as a whitetail. Bear vitals are about 5" behind their elbow.

I used 150"s on both of mine. I would not hesitate to use a good 150 gr bullet.

I know for handloading my Win M88 .308 that it has a tough time getting a MOA group with any bullet heavier than 150gr. But , those 150gr. will cloverleaf at 100 yards.

I shoot 180 round nose in my pump, which the gun likes. I've always been in the heavy for caliber camp when it comes to bullets. Then again 99% of my hunting is deep woods where a 100 yard shot is rare. With that being said my son shoots 165gr in his Remington 700 and so do I in my model 70 Winchester, because that's what they like. I don't see any reason why a 150 gr won't work, especially core loc. The thing to remember is if the bear is moving keep shooting, don't care if it's walking, running, or rolling on the ground. I say this because a wounded bear may not leave much of a blood trail due to the fat, thick hide and fur soaking it up before the blood can hit the ground. Another reason is I don't want a crippled bear getting off the top and down over the side of the mountains we hunt, not a fun time retrieving one from the bottom of a ravine. Good luck on you hunt bushmaster.

The average bear is 200 lbs. 150 is fine. Shot placement is always the key

I'm really excited about going. I'll be hunting for 3 days in the area of Hyner Mountain. I'm thinking it's Clinton County, but will be staying a little north of LockHaven.

Family had a camp in Hyner back in the 1930’s,, lost it when the state created the park. It’s still there, state now uses it as a rental cabin, think it’s the only one they have. I have a photo of it with 6 big bucks hanging from the meat pole, know they also killed some bears too. Great area,

First shot i missed when it hit the opeing in the laurel. (Yes moving fast from a line of drivers as i was posted up a tree) second shot was a double lung on the run. Basically went were the momentum took it. Couldnt see it even in snow over 15" deep. Laurel was that thick. I wouldnt hesitate. If it shots the 150 the best use em
