Got back from a short trip up to Benezette today. Monday (yesterday) was a perfect day weather wise to make any outdoor trip in Pa. The Mrs and I were "guided" by our neighbors who have made many fall trips to that area. We viewed about 100 elk.....albeit the group(s) we saw in the am were likely the same or some of the same we saw in the pm. But....that's my math and I'm sticking to it!!! In the afternoon at one viewing point, there were at least 20 cows and for sure 4 different bulls in that same group. It appeared the lesser bulls were staying away from the largest bull and they did nothing as he chased a not-ready cow around the field for a time. We went over to another view point and watched as a smaller bull made his approach to a group of cows that were coming out of the woods. Then, the heard's "real" leader stepped out and the short but uneventful chase by the big bull.......scaring off the smaller rival back where he came from ensued. Really a neat sight to see. All in all a great day......albeit a long day. We spent the night at the Cobblestone Inn in St. Mary's. A new and very clean place. Interesting to note that during our checkin, the manager answered the phone for an apparent inquiry as to room availability for this coming weekend. He stated they were completely booked!! Retirement is nice when you can visit a place during the week. We didn't have huge crowds to contend with or traffic jams. And man.....those animals are BIG!!!

Three years ago that field was rocking. The last two years it has been a dud. I'm limited as to how many I can post but we had a great viewing year last year and every year for the past 5 or 6. Linda Stager and Todd Plank both have been posting lots of photos on fbook this year. It all depends on when you are there. Like the whitetail rut --- it's gonna happen regardless. You just got be right time, right place when it happens in order to see it. Last year:

Did you have a beer at the Eternal Tap at the Straub brewery? The tap is closed because of the virus.
