Headed to my Sullivan County Camp to hunt Monday & Tuesday. Hunted Loyalsock State Forest both days. Monday I combed those rugged Sully ridges for approx 13 miles per pedmeter walking slow, stopping/calling with no gobbling. Beautiful day but quiet. Monday night temps dropped to low 30's so a a brisk morning was in store next day. Tuesday morning headed to south/eastern side of a huge Loyalsock SF trek thinking it would warm-up a lil faster. I was not more than 1/2 mile from truck and had 2 young hens answer and pass within 20 yards. Then quiet next 2 hours. I was alternating between my Cody 6.5 One Slider and my Kip's Feroce Hardwood Whacker box calls. Both are fairly laud calls great for long distance calling in the big mountain woods. All of a sudden I got a a single/faint gobble sounding like several hundred yards out the ridge. It was barely audible. Then nothing for at least a half hour. I slowed initial calling down to once in about every 5 minutes.....nothing. Then all of a sudden he appeared like a ghost off to my right about 30 yards as he silently came in all that distance. He was moving like a snail in a small thicket but got to a small opening & my crosshairs were already squarely on his head. A stout load of Federal Heavyweights no 7's from my Browning Gold 12 ga 3.5" Magnum/fitted with a Trulock choke flopped him like a load of bricks. His head was pretty much pulverized. My longbeard weighed 23 lbs with 10" beard w/1.25" spurs:

Dandy bird Loggy, congratulations. Bowbum....you probably recognize the location of pic as being the historic Hillsgrove Beer Distributor!! New owner Julie Shannon graciously took my pic. She's a lot better lookin than prior owner Danny Baumunk!! Saw the High Knob Inn still for sale....doubt if Pat will ever get his asking price of $350K.

Nice bird, congratulations . Haven made a decision on the federal TSS heavy weights #7 out of my 20 gage with a Truglo Headbanger choke. Only fired one shot, no scope, at 40 yards. It would of killed the turkey but didn't have the density I was expecting. Those old mountain birds can be hard. Here's a little story about one. Years ago we had an old gobbler near camp you could hear off the front porch most mornings. We hunted that bird for two years and never got him, following year he was gone. A young friend stoped in camp that fall, he was in his 20's at that time, and one heck of a turkey hunter, especially for his age.The conversation turned to turkey hunting, and I told him about this bird, he just did a big smile. I said you SOB you killed that gobbler, he laughed and said yeah, how I asked. The following is his story. "I went in a little before day light and set up. The bird started in at firs light so I did a couple of soft tree yelps, waited a little bit then did a fly down cackle, and a couple of yelps. I never made another sound until the gun when off, three hours later when he came sneaking along the bench looking for the hen.

My history with the Baumunk family goes back to 1956 so out of respect I'll be careful what I say. But yeah, Danny was no poster gal. High Knob for sale "again' or "still?" Seems like a year ago we checked on it and it was some crazy price! The old days of tap rooms being a fair investment are gone forever. One near us, the Colley Pub does a hell of a business but it is the food and location that carry it.

The ole Hillsgrove Hotel at the Loyalsock does show some signs of resurgence though. When I was a kid it was the "go to" stop for local camps. Heard they have a good lookin barmaid that could be reason of increased traffic there!!

You've been having some great hunts Loggy. Thanks 3212!! Just love getting out in those magnificent mountains. Been hunting the area since 1963 and each year love it even more. Great getting away from TV, internet, cell phones for a couple days just tuning in to radio's WILQ Country 105 out of Williamsport.

Tagged out on No. 2 Yesterday with lil brother of No. 1 killed first week!! Alternated between Kips Hardwood Whacker box and Mikes Lapps push button when he was closing in. He cooperated better than his sneaky silent brother with decent gobbling all the way in. Weighed 18 lbs, 8.5” beard w/1” spurs. Time to put guns/turkey calls away & go fishing!!!!! Purdy tail feathers a lil soaked as he did final death flops in a swamp:
