Did anyone send fur to NAFA for the fur auction this week? The prices for Raccoon, Red fox and even PA coyote were unreal. Long hair fur is high priced this year.

Yeah NAFA auction house is held in Canada. I know guys with PA coon that averaged $35 and tops in the mid $50 and Pa coyote that averaged in the $70's and red fox averaged in the $65 range. We have to remember that these are primarly early goods. The Heavy primed late season goods ussually sell in the May auctions. I have all mine ready to send to FHA for the May sale. I sure hope these prices stay at this level. Before this sale I said I would be happy to get what I got last season. $13 average on coon and $44 on reds but $35 and $65 would be a lot better so lets hope they hold. It's a lot of work and it's about time we make up for 20+ yrs of dirt cheap fur prices.

I agree w/ Longbeard!! Great for you all still at the game!! I hung up my traps some 35 years ago..life had just taken me a different direction. (still have 'em, though I always enjoy meeting those still running lines, and it usually makes the day, one of thoroughly enjoyable reflection back in time to a more relaxed period of life. "Relaxed" Yeah right, getting up at 4 AM every morning before school, so there was time to do both my 'required' family chores, and RUN, literally...five miles of lines ...meet the bus at 8 AM...and NOT being asked to sit somewhere/ anywhere! but near the driver .......

I think my brother took his furs to a trapper association auction here in PA?
He just came back from North Carolina with a lot of fur, and I believe he sends that out, somewhere.

Not that I trap for money but it is nice. I have always loved trapping but the real reason I do it now a days is because of my 6 yr old daughter. She loves it and has been running the trap line with me since she's been 18 1/2 months old and tells me all the time that here favorite season of the year is trapping season. She loves hiking, looking for sign, running the line and seeing the critters. This year she wanted to dig in her own sets. So being the proud daddy I am, of coarse she did. Here's some pics. starting the bed lollypop & a smile Her 1st coon from her set Her 1st Grinner from the set and he's a true GIANT ! Happy days on the line! Nothing like have your buddy enjoy the things you love.

Double WOW! Can't start'em young enough, my opinion. Good to see prices come up. Probably like planting corn? Big prices one year, more jump on that wagon and the following year, things go south again?

Yeah Denny I thought after last years prices everybody and thier brother would be throwing steel in the ground and I was right. Hard to find property to set without someone already there. Lucky I have a couple all to myself that I've had for yrs. Next year will be twice as bad.

Neat LB!! My Dad got me into trapping when i was very young too....mainly muskrats. Yeah Loggy my dad & grandfather started me trapping rats when I was like 10 or 11. I started coon trapping the culverts on our road for coon when I was 12. By the time I was 14 I had bought a 12' flatbottom boat from a neighbor with my trapping money and trapped the Conestoga river that we lived along a half mile down stream on the east bank then on the return a half mile of the west bank. All by pole'n that boat up and down and all before school. Then when I got my drivers lic. that's when I started hitting the reds. My hope is that my daughter will continue her interest. I think she will but there are so many other things for kids to get into today and not many people like the thought of trapping. It is so taboo today. I know last year when she was in pre school and learning the alphabet they would color pictures of things that started with the letter of the week. Well when it was letter R's week the teacher gave them a coloring sheet with four pics to be colored and one was a raccoon. Well daughter colored the coon's body brown and the head red. The teacher told her that she's never seen a red headed raccoon before. And of coarse my daughter who was 4 at the time says " well they do after daddy & I catch them in a trap". LOL well when I went to pick her up that day I had to have a talk with the teacher cause she wasn't comfortable with the subject. I just stated that I understood her point but hoped she would understand mine. That my great granddad, granddad, dad, me and now my daughter have done it and hopefully will continue to do it till the day we die. Because it's something we love. The teacher always looked at me a little different after that day. My daughter talks to her friends about our days on the line and they all seem very interested and I have taken a few along to run our line and they always enjoy it. I think more kids need to get out in the woods. I know my girl loves it as does her mother. I think that helps also. It's a family thing for us.

Your doing your job Longhunter in exposing her to the sport. I got both of my girls involved in fishing & only one stayed with it(now 26). She loves both crabbing & all kinds of fishing. My other is 29 but it never got ahold of her. Neither had any interest in hunting I think mainly cause my Mrs aint a hunter and got them involved in her kinda stuff...crafts, painting etc.. You sure got a cute lil girl there!!

That is AWESOME longbeard! While I never hit the trap line (always wished I had); I did some types of trapping (squirrel eating our walnuts and mice) as a kid- it never bothered me and I was "hunting". She's a life-long hunter; that I promise. She may leave it for a while, but it will ALWAYS be with her and they will always be some of her most fond memories.
Your daughter is adorable, and the pics (and story) are GREAT!

Thanks for all the kind words everyone. She's my little bubb and my pride and joy. I think and hope you are right GTF's. She loves her trapping, loves shooting her compound bow and loves her BB Gun and loves to watch mom and dad shoot thier guns. Always tells me she can't wait to kill a turkey with her bow. I hope that when she gets to the dating age, ( if I let her date :-) and it's trapping season) she'll one day tell her date. " I need to skin a couple fox and coon before I go out". That would make me smile !
